Academic Performance amidst Bullying: Experiences of Junior High School

Students in Cyberbullying

In today’s society, a lot of people are experiencing cyberbullying. Especially

nowadays that all the things that we are doing, are being done through internet. We connect

and contact each people through the internet which helps us a lot. But in reality, there is

something that isn’t right. We, the researchers decided to cope with this problem to further

understand the victims and the person who done that action. Whether that person is dealing

with something that’s why he or she vent out his or her feelings to the victim. Cyberbullying

is an act of spreading lies, threatening someone else peace, sending mean messages to, and

giving them anxiety. As stated by Galík et al. (2018) a lot of websites require only login or a

phone number that can also be made up which can explain the fact that instant-messaging

was found to be the most common means of cyberbullying among undergraduate students

with a negative influence on academic, family, and emotional development (depression,

anxiety, and suicidal ideation). The purpose of this study is to examine the frequency and

media used to perpetrate Cyberbullying, as well as the relationship that it has with the

academic, social, and emotional development of undergraduate students.

Since the main scope is cyber bullying, this research will be done online, if the

victims may agree. The main participants are the students from Holy Angel University,

Junior High School Students.

The study revealed that the type of dominant frequent cyber bullying words is

intelligence, personality, and insulting words that describe the behavior, appearance of the

female victims and sex related words that humiliate female victims (Patacsil, 2019).

The majority of individuals spend their time on the internet, particularly at this time

of the pandemic, since more people are staying at home. Cyber bullying can occur on digital

platforms like social media, messaging apps, emails, and online games. Due to the

prevalence of social media, individuals' comments, images, posts, and content may often be

read by anonymous users, and they can interact publicly, allowing cyber bully to leave mean,

hurtful content, personal information about another person in a way that humiliates or

embarrasses them. The researchers conducted this study at Lyceum of the Philippines

University, for the first semester of the academic year of 2021-2022. The respondents were

from different grade levels of Junior High School at Lyceum of the Philippines University

The general objective of this narrative study is to understand the influence of bullying

specifically cyber bullying on the academic performance of Junior High School students at

Lyceum of the Philippines University for the school year 2021-2022. Hinduja, S.&Patchin, J.

W. (2021) states that youth have been bullying each other for generations. The latest

generation, however, can utilize technology to expand their reach and extend of their harm.

Stop bullying (2021) defines cyber bullying as another type of bullying, it can happen

through digital devices where people can spread negative, harmful, false, or mean content

about someone else.

The overall purpose of this study is to promote awareness and educate people about

how cyberbullying affects a student's mental health and academic performance, as well as

how to protect themselves from cyberbullies.

LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

According to Batool et al. (2017) Cyberbullying can take various forms, including

sending text messages via mobile or the internet, making disparaging comments on social

media, posting disgusting images, or threatening. As claimed by Talpur et al. (2018) These

are harmful and offensive online conversations between multiple individuals. This is similar

to physical bullying, except that cyberbullying occurs through social media. The majority of

victims are bullied online by sending direct unpleasant comments, prank calling, and

spreading fake information. Based on Mikhaylovsky et al. (2019) the physical effects of

cyberbullying should be considered on a physiological and medical level. Cyberbullying has

an impact on the entire body's functioning. Depressions and stresses arise, resulting in a

reduction in immunity; frequent complaints of headaches, heart discomfort, nausea,

exhaustion, poor sleep, and occasionally insomnia; decreased memory and focus, speech

abnormalities, or nerve tics blinking; poor appetite.

As stated by Bernardo et al. (2020) the relationship between bullying and university

students' intention to drop out, the findings show that being bullied (both traditional and

online bullying) is an influential factor that increases the likelihood that young people will

consider dropping out of their higher education courses.

LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

Many theories are related to cyberbullying however Social Dominance Theory by

Felicia Pratto & Andrew L. Stewart (2011) will be adopted in this study. Based on Social

Dominance Theory the use of disproportionate force against subordinate groups helps to

maintain stable inequality among groups. As stated by Pratto & Stewart (2011) social

dominance theory in order to maintain their social hierarchy within the group structure,

individuals who are more aggressive and have higher rank, status, or power victimize others

who are lower rank, status, or power. Cyberbullies insult someone on the internet because

they believe it gives them power. Being able to cyberbully someone may help them deal with

their low self-esteem and feel like they are the strongest one. Those who are popular

frequently make fun of children who are not as popular. As example many cyberbullies are

either now considered “popular” and are attempting to maintain that status, or they are a

nobody seeking attention. Some people believe it is all a game. They think they are funny to

say hurtful things to them. Particularly if it is done through the internet. These examples

show the social dominance between the two groups the dominant and less dominant group.

Furthermore, the study can now determine what causes cyberbullying in the first place,

thanks to the application of this theory. Consider applying this theory to identify Lyceum of

the Philippines University students who have been victims of cyberbullying in the SY 2021-

2022.

The general objective of this narrative study is to understand the influence of bullying

specifically cyber bullying on the academic performance of Junior High School students at

states that youth have been bullying each other for generations. The latest generation,

1. What are the causes of Cyber bullying to the students' mental health?
Academic Performance amidst Cyberbullying of JHS students 13
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

2. How it will affect the Junior High School students at Holy Angel University to

their academic performances caused by cyberbullying?

3. How will this research change the perspective of the victims including the bullies?

In our research topic about bullying, we focus to study about the experiences of

Junior High School Students through cyberbullying or bullying in the population of students

that we interview we choose Junior High School Students, and, in this interview, we use

convenience sampling method a random selection of Junior High School classes was used

and 16 Students per class 8 Girls and 8 Boys with a balanced male and female ratio.

Originally teachers give the survey form per class. We choose Junior High School Students

because we also can understand them, or we can also understand their situation because our

age is just in common level and, they can give us more knowledge and facts about their

experience if they are being bullied by other students. As we interview students our teacher

given us just a limited time to fulfill this survey and one of the reasons that’s why or time is

limited is we now in our time experienced Covid-19. The focus of the study is about the

Experiences of Junior High School Students through cyberbullying. This study is conducted

to find information of the students' academic performance amidst bullying. According to an

article, One-third of Filipino teens experience cyberviolence in forms such as sexual

messages, and verbal abuse through internet. Violence against teens in cyberbullying affects

the physical and emotional of their well-being. (UNICEF, 2019). This shows that a lot of

people can easily target these teenagers for their enlightenment but will destroy the

teenager’s perspective around the world that is why this study was conducted. The study will

contain a prepared questionnaire for the participants since this is qualitative research. The

LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

interview includes video conference because of the current situation on the pandemic. Our

study is focused on cyberbullying. Social media is used to perpetrate cyberbullying. In

today's world, there are incidents of cyberbullying that have terrible consequences for many

teenagers, including trauma and the possibility of suicide. It was assumed that the research

was carried out by trustworthy researchers. The literature review was also expected to clearly

establish the prevalence and intensity of cyberbullying. The study's weaknesses included the

fact that cyberbullying is a relatively new topic, therefore a lot of the research overlaps by

citing the same studies.

Our study only focus is about online harassment or cyber bullying it focuses the

things that teenagers do or in counter in social media like harassment using electronic means,

sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else.

Not like on face to face bullying or natural bullying our research only focuses on cyber

bullying that’s why we conducted survey at the high school classes to see or to know what

the effects of cyber bullying to the teenagers who is are now taking online class because of

new form of education. The study is delimited to only cyber bullying and doesn't co-exist

with bullying face-to-face and people who doesn't have access in online platforms or use of

internet.

The Significant point of this study is to know and explore the experiences of Junior

High School students from Holy Angel University. This study is significant because it aims

to provide school leaders and policymakers with information on how to proactively create

policies that decrease the prevalence and negative effects of cyberbullying. We will be

knowing the experiences of the cyberbullied student at Holy Angel University and the effect

of that cyberbullying on them. Besides this study will be beneficial to the Students, the
Academic Performance amidst Cyberbullying of JHS students 15
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

Parents, the Teachers, and to the community of the Filipino social media user and future

researchers.

The results will be providing the students with some knowledge on bullying and how

it can be prevented. And it will give the students an idea that bullying is not good for the

mental health of both students and people around them. Also, this research will help them to

know why it is happening and why until now it hasn’t been stopped.

The given data would guide the teachers on what to do with the students who

experienced cyberbullying. In this, they will identify what major problems the bullied might

have. This study also aims to further understand all those victims and give them enough

attention and care.

Like the teachers, the parents too will understand why their children are bullied or

bullying during their time of classes. The data of our research can help them and formulate

some preventive measures to help their children from bullying. The findings would also help

them to learn and give a good action of their child.

It is beneficial to the community that cyberbullying has been stopped because it will

make people confident and happy as they are not being reminded of their insecurities or the

words a stranger told them. Also, to better understand.

This study aims to develop and understand what the victims experienced. And also,

for future researchers, this will help to give them more idea and more understanding in this

specific situation. To cope with this problem, we should all unite and stop that action.

Method

Participants

The study participants will be students in Holy Angel University's Junior High School

Basic Education who have experienced cyberbullying. With these, we will conduct up to 15

in this study. The researchers came up with this sample size because there are a large number

of students who are victims of cyberbullying. We only chose 15 participants because we had

a limited amount of time. Those who voluntarily participated will be much appreciated. Since

this is qualitative research, our participants are limited.

The researchers utilized convenience and purposive sampling in their non-probability

sampling. Participants will be chosen via convenience sampling based on their availability

and willingness to participate. The researcher chooses convenience sampling before we begin

interviewing individuals we will ask their permission if they are willing to participate in this

study. Purposive sampling was used to select participants who shared a common experience

and met the criteria for this study. Since our participants will be a student in Holy Angel

University who experience cyberbullying.

The participants in the study are Grade 7 up to Grade 10 of Holy Angel University

from Junior High School Students either male or female. The researchers chose those

participants to understand the influence of bullying specifically cyber bullying on the

academic performance of Junior High School students at Holy Angel University for the

school year 2021-2022.

Academic Performance amidst Cyberbullying of JHS students 17
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

Instrument

The researchers have chosen an unstructured type of interview to get specific

questions that are needed to be answered and can be adjusted if needed to change the

information gained and the interviewer would be required to study the topic making him/her

knowledgeable so they can ask the right questions. Unstructured interviews are mostly

unrehearsed. These mostly have open ended questions and is flexible since the questions

depending on the response of the person and this type of interview is also informal because

the aim of the interviewer is to make the participants feel comfortable to strike a detailed yet

professional interaction. (Bihu, 2020)

Design

This study is qualitative research and the research design used in this study is the

narrative research design. The researcher used narrative research to better understand the

influence of bullying specifically cyberbullying on the academic performance of Junior High

School students at Holy Angel University for the school year 2021-2022. As stated by

Carless, D & Douglas, K (2017) Narrative approach can provide a lot of information about a

person's life. Rather of emphasizing constructions, ideas, or abstractions, narrative methods

emphasize a person's own experience of tangible experiences. As claimed by Ntinda (2020)

Narrative research aims to unravel consequential stories of people’s lives as told by them in

their own words and worlds. In the context of the health, social sciences, and education,

narrative research is both a data gathering and interpretive or analytical framework. This

approach is best suited for studies that focus on individuals based on their own experiences,

which is why it is the most appropriate research design for this study.
Academic Performance amidst Cyberbullying of JHS students 18
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

Procedure

The researchers, decided on an individual interview, because of the sensitive topics.

Unstructured is used as a tool to learn about or interview students. In an unstructured

interview, the interviewer simply shares his or her experiences, and the interviewer is

knowledgeable. The importance of respondents' voluntary engagement in the research is

highlighted in this interview. If a participant wishes, they can withdraw from the study at any

time. The interviewers give their informed agreement to participate. The principle of

informed consent entails researchers providing sufficient information and assurances about

participating for individuals to fully understand the implications of participation and make an

informed, deliberate, and freely given decision about whether to participate, without any

pressure or coercion.

In the writing of that talk-to-talk part, offensive, discriminatory, or other undesirable

language must be avoided. The respondent's or interviewer's privacy and confidentiality must

be protected at all costs. This instrument or method of informing the interviewee is to post a

letter of considerations on the Holy Angel University campus so that they are aware of the

terms and conditions if they are selected as interviewers, and these are the terms and

considerations if the interviewee is chosen.

1. The interviewee should not be subjected to harm in any ways whatsoever.

2. We Respect for the dignity of the interviewee should be prioritized.

3. His/her protection of the privacy of research participants must be ensured.

4. Anonymity of individuals and organizations participating in the research must be

ensured.

5. The one who interview must be professional and make their personal life exempted.
Academic Performance amidst Cyberbullying of JHS students 19
LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES UNIVERSITY

6. Discuss intellectual property frankly.

7. Be conscious of multiple roles.

8. Follow informed-consent rules.

9. Limits of confidentiality, such as data coding, disposal, sharing and archiving, and

when confidentiality must be broken.

10. Respect confidentiality and privacy.
