concepts of functions.
Lesson 1: Concept of Function
Lesson 2: Piece-wise Function
Lesson 3: Evaluation on Function
Lesson 4: Operations on Function
Date: August 17-22, 2020
CONCEPT OF FUNCTION Week: 1 Learning Sheet: 1
OBJECTIVE;
At the end of the lesson, the learners can represents real-life situations using functions,
including piece-wise functions by:
1. Defining the term function, and
2. Determining the different ways in representing function

I. ENGAGING ON TASK
1.1. Setting emotional climate:
 Palming
Start this exercise in a comfortable position. First, rub your palms together to create a
bit of heat. Next, form your hands into cup shapes. Now, take your hands and press
them over your (closed) eyes. Put your left hand on your left eye and right hand on
your right eye. Let the heat warm your eyes and relax for a few minutes like this.

1.2. Refreshing prior knowledge:

Instructions: Identify and write the word FUNCTION whether the relationship that exists
between each of the pairs indicates a function and write the word NOT if it is not.
Write your answer on the space provided before the number.
_____________________ 1. A jeepney and its plate number
_____________________ 2. A teacher and his/her cellular phone
_____________________ 3. A student and his/her I.D number
_____________________ 4. A pen and the color of its ink

Guide questions:
1. How do we determine whether the relation is a function?
_______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
2. When can we say if the given is not function?
_______________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
LINKING STATEMENT
You have learned that a function is a relation in which each element of the domain
corresponds to exactly one element of the range. Just like functions, we have
relationship with our family and friends. As a teenager, how will you show your good
relation to your family and friends? Today, you will learn what function is and the
different ways of representing function.
II. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
2.1. Summary of essential concepts:

DEFINITION

A relation is any set of ordered pairs. The domain of a

relation is the set of first coordinates. The Range is the set
of second coordinates.
A function (f) is a relation in which each element of the
domain corresponds to exactly one element of the range.
EXAMPLE: 1
The relation of LETTER and NUMBER is a
LETTER NUMBER FUNCTION, because:
 Every element of LETTER
corresponds to exactly one
A 4 element of the NUMBER.
B 8
C 12  No element in LETTER has two or
D 16 more relation in NUMBER.
E So it follows the rules.

(Notice how element D and E of LETTER

relate to element 16 of NUMBER, which is
allowed.

EXAMPLE: 2

The relation of X and Y is NOT a

X Y
FUNCTION, because:
1. The element 9 of X corresponds to
two values of Y, which are 6 and 10.
3 2
6 4
2. The element 12 of X doesn’t 6
9
correspond to any values of Y. 8
12
10
(Notice the element 8 of Y is also doesn’t
correspond any value in X, which is also
allowed.

FUNCTION can be represented in different ways as shown below:

 Function as set of Ordered Pairs (x, y):

EXAMPLE:
Solution:
a. *( )( )( )( )+ The example given (a) and (d) are function
since no two ordered pairs have the same values
b. ( )( )( ) of x.
Example (c) is not a Function because there
c. *( )( )( )+ are ordered pairs have the same first element x.
Example (b) is also not a function because
d. *( )( )( )( )+
it does not indicate a set or it doesn’t have
the braces { } to be called set.
 Function as Mapping Diagram

CAR PLATE #

1 CDB 643
2 UBT 465 The relation of CAR and PLATE # is a Function
3 JUV 476 because in every element in CAR has exactly
4 ABS 540 one element in PLATE #.
5 GAB 326

 Function as Table of Values

No. of Eggs Price of

(x) breakfast (y)
1 ₱ 10.00 The given correspondence is a Function.
2 ₱ 18.00
3 ₱ 22.00

Height (x) Weight (y)

77 in 185 lb
The given correspondence is NOT a Function
65 in 209 lb
since there are two ordered pairs having the
65 in 125 lb same first element, which are (65 in, 209 lb)
68 in 149 lb and (65 in, 125 lb).
71 in 189 lb

 Function as a Graph
To determine if the graph is a function or not we use vertical line test.

Vertical Line Test

A graph represents a function if and only if no vertical line intersects the

graph in more than one point

Using the Vertical line test in figure a, and c, we have…

 Figure a is a function, because Vertical Line crosses one point
while;

 Figure c is NOT a function, because the Vertical Line crosses

two points.
2.2. Testing of knowledge:

PIECE-WISE FUNCTION Week: 1 Learning Sheet: 2
OBJECTIVE;
At the end of the lesson, the learners can represents real-life situations using functions,
including piece-wise functions by:
1. Defining the piece-wise function
2. evaluating the piece-wise function
3. Writing a piece-wise function given an application

I. ENGAGING ON TASK
1.1. Setting emotional climate:
 Blinking

Since a lack of blinking is one of the contributing factors to computer-induced

eyestrain as it dries out your eyes and causes scratchiness, it’s very important to
blink. You may have to train yourself to blink normally while computing. Aim for a
blink every four seconds to keep your eyes nicely lubricated and happy. This
sounds like a simple task, but when focusing on a computer screen it can be
difficult to remember.

1.2. Refreshing prior knowledge:

Instructions: Write the following in Piece-wise function form.
a) When x is less than 2, it gives x2
b) When x is exactly 2, it gives 6
c) When x is more than 2 and less than or equal to 6, it gives 10 – x

Guide questions:
1. How do we write it in the piece-wise function?

________________________________________________________________________________

2. How do we solve the Piece-wise function?

Linking Statement

In many Real-Life problems, functions may be represented by a combination of

equations. Such function is called Piece-wise function. This day, we are going to
represent real-life situations using piece-wise function by defining piecewise function,
evaluating function and writing piece-wise function given an application.
II. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
2.1. Summary of essential learning:

DEFINITION
Piece-wise Function
A piecewise function is a function where more than one formula is
used to define the output. Each formula has its own domain, and the
domain of the function is the union of all of these smaller domains.
We notate this idea like this:
𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑖𝑓 𝑥𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑑𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛
𝑓(𝑥)
𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑖𝑓 𝑥𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑑𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛

EXAMPLE: 1

𝑥≤
𝑓(𝑥)
𝑥 𝑥>
a) What is f(-1)
 𝑥 ≤ , so we use 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑠𝑜 𝑓( )
b) What is f(1)
 𝑥 ≤ 𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑠𝑜 𝑓( )
c) What is f(4)
 𝑥 > 𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑥 𝑠𝑜 𝑓( )

SOLUTION: 2
𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤
𝑓(𝑥) 2
𝑥 𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 >

a) What is f(1)
 𝑥 ≤ , so we use 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑥 𝑠𝑜
𝑓( ) 𝑥
𝑓( ) ( )
𝑓( )

b) What is f(3)
 𝑥 > 𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑥2 𝑥 𝑠𝑜
𝑓( ) 𝑥 2 𝑥
2
𝑓( ) ( )
𝑓( ) 9
𝑓( )

c) What is f(-4)
 𝑥 ≤ 𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑥 𝑠𝑜
𝑓( ) 𝑥
𝑓( ) ( )
𝑓( )
𝑓( )
EXAMPLE: 3

A Doctor's fee is based on the length of time.

 Up to 6 minutes cost $50

 Over 6 minutes up to 15 minutes cost $80
 Over 15 minutes cost $80 plus $5 per minute above 15 minutes

In piece-wise function we can write like this:

$ 𝑖𝑓 𝑡 ≤
𝑓(𝑡) $ 𝑖𝑓 < 𝑡 ≤
$ + $ (𝑡 ) 𝑖𝑓 𝑡 >

a) You visit for 12 minutes, how much is the fee?

 <𝑡≤ 𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑓(𝑡) $
b) You visit for 22 minutes, how much is the fee
 𝑡> 𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑓(𝑡) $ + $ (𝑡 )
𝑓( ) $ +$ ( )
𝑓( ) $ + $ ( ) $ + $ $

3.1. Productive teamwork
STRATEGIES: Think/Write, Pair, Share

Instructions:
STEP 1: Individually, determine the two different formulas needed and answer the
questions ask.
STEP 2: Together with your partner discuss each other about your answer.
STEP 3: Come up with one report and submit it on the given date.
STEP 4: Write your report on the worksheet attached in this file.

“A museum charges ₱ 50 per person for a guided tour for a group of 1 to 9

people or a fixed ₱ 500 fee for a group of 10 or more people.” Write a function
relating the number of people (n) to the cost (C)

Note:
Write the formula in a piece-wise function.

Answer the following:

a) If there were 7 people visit at the museum, how much is the fee
b) If there are 100 people visit the museum, how much is the fee?

EVALUATION OF FUNCTION Week: 1 Learning Sheet: 3
OBJECTIVE;
At the end of the lesson, the learners can evaluate a function by:
1. Defining how to evaluate a function
2. Illustrating how to evaluate a function

I. ENGAGING ON TASK
1.3. Setting emotional climate:
 Glancing
Sometimes a glance is more than just a glance! Start this one with your eyes closed
while sitting. Keep your eyes closed as you glance up as far as comfortably possible.
Hold for a moment, then look down. Repeat a few times and then take an eye-
breather (open your eyes and look around). Next, close your eyes again. Now,
keeping your eyes closed like before, look to the right and the left. Repeat this a few
times.

1.4. Refreshing prior knowledge:

Instructions: Solve the following, if x = 3 and y = -2
a) x2 + 2x +1
b) 3x - 2y
c) x - 2y

Guide question:
1. What method can we use to solve the equations?
2. How can we use that method to solve the equations?

Linking Statement
You have learned in the previous discussion that a function can be presented in a
form of equation. The number assigned to a given variable determines the value of
the function at that number. This process is known as Evaluating of Function. In today’s
lesson, we are going to evaluate a function by defining how to evaluate a function,
and illustrating on how to evaluate a function.
II. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
2.1. Summary of essential concepts:

DEFINITION

Law of Substitution
If a + x = b and x = c, then
a+c=b
Example:
To find the value of 2n – 11 when n is 12
Substitute 12 in a place of n in 2n – 11 to get 2(12) – 11 = 24 – 11 = 13
DEFINITION

The function notation y = f(x) tells you that y is a function of x. if there

is a rule relating y to x, such as y = 3x + 1, then you can also write:

f(x)= 3x +1

The name of a function f. other f(x) is read as ”f of x,” and this

letters may be used to name a represent the value of the function
function, specially g and h at x.

Remember that:
1. f(x)means “ the value of f to x” it does not mean “f times x”
2. letters other than f such as G and H or g and h can also be used
in naming function.
3. F is the name of the function and f(x) is the value of the function
at x

EXAMPLE:

Let f be a function defined by 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑥 . Find the following

a) 𝑓( )
b) 𝑓( )
c) 𝑓(2)
Solution:
Replace the x by the given value of x in each item. Then simplify.
a) 𝑓( )
𝑓( ) 𝑥 c) 𝑓(2)
𝑓( ) ( ) 𝑓 𝑥
𝑓( )
