Hello! How are you? Let us start this week by remembering our last week lesson about circle. On the figure
below are the parts of the circle. In addition, to our previous discussion about the different parts of the circle let
me share with you the other important part of the circle which are the tangent, secant, segment, and sector.

 Tangent to a circle is a line that touches the circle at one point, which is known as Tangency. At the point
of Tangency, Tangent to a circle is always perpendicular to the radius.
 Secant Lines. A secant line is a line that intersects a circle at two points. Every secant line,
therefore, contains a chord of the circle it intersects.
 A segment of a circle can be defined as a region bounded by a chord and a corresponding arc lying
between the chord's endpoints. So, it can be said that a circular segment is a region of a circle which
is created by breaking apart from the rest of the circle through a secant or a chord.
 A circular sector or circle sector (symbol: ⌔), is the portion of a disk enclosed by two radii and an arc,
where the smaller area is known as the minor sector and the larger being the major sector.

Tangent and Secant

A tangent to a circle is a line coplanar with the circle and intersects it in one and only one
point. The point of intersection of the line and the circle is called the point of tangency.
Example: In the figure on the right, PQ ´ intersects ⨀ C at A. PQ ´ is a tangent line and A is
the point of tangency.

Segments and rays that are contained in the tangent or intersect the circle in one and
only one point are also said to be tangent to the circle.
Example: In the figure on the right, MN and ⃗QR are tangent to ⨀ S.

A Secant is a line that intersects a circle at exactly two points. A secant contains
a chord of a circle. Example: In circle A, MN´ is a secant line.

How Are Circles Used in Real Life?

A circle is symmetric about its center and any one of its diameters.  Architects often use the circle's
symmetrical properties when designing athletic tracks, recreational parks, buildings, roundabouts, Ferris-
wheels, etc.  Artists and painters find the circle almost indispensable in their work.  Circular cylinders are used
to print newspapers.  Engineers exploit the circle's symmetrical properties as seen by the use of the circle in
making watches, clocks, bicycles, cars, trains, ships, airplanes, radios, telephones, trolleys, wheel-barrows,
air-conditioners, rockets etc.  Civilization has progressed dramatically because of the invention of the circular
wheel.
