Assignment
1. Define each of the following types of diet and state what foods should be
increased or decreased in the diet for each type.

 Low sodium diet: this is useful in lowering blood pressure for sodium,
sensitive people. This diet is also used in the management of kidney
diseases. Foods to be decreased are: salt, ham, bacon, sausage,
frankfurters, salted nuts etc. Foods to be increased are: eggs,
vegetables, fresh fruits, dry peas and beans etc.

 High fiber diet: usually employed in the treatment of certain digestive


problems including constipation. It’s also recommended foe persons
suffering with diabetes or heart disease. Foods to be decreased are:
refined flours, sugar, chocolate etc. Foods to be increased are: fresh
fruits and vegetables, whole-grain products etc.
 Low fat diet: used extensively by persons who wish to lower high
levels of cholesterol in their blood, as well as wishing to lose weight.
Foods to be decreased are: fats, meats and proteins, dairy etc. Foods to
be increased are: lean meat such as (skinless chicken and turkey),
whole grain foods, vegetables, fruits etc.

 Reduced sugar diet: usually employed in the treatment of diabetes and


obesity. This diet usually assists in reducing blood glucose levels.
Foods to be decreased are: sweets, soda and juice, refined flour,
reduce sugar etc. Foods to be increased are: fresh fruits, eggs,
vegetables etc.
 Soft diet: A soft diet is made up of foods that are soft and easy to
chew and swallow. These foods may be chopped, ground, mashed,
pureed, and moist. Foods to be decreased are: spicy or irritating foods
( hot peppers, tomato sauce etc), foods to be increased are: eggs,
fruits, dairy products etc.

 Liquid diet: A liquid diet consists only of liquids instead of solid food.
This includes homemade or store-bought juices and smoothies,
homemade protein shakes, premade protein shakes and store-bought
liquid meal replacements. You can replace all meals and snacks with
liquids or do a partial liquid diet, eating some solid foods as well.
Liquids/foods to be decreased are: sodas, alcohol etc, liquids /foods to
be increased are water, fruit juices, protein shakes, plain ice cream etc.
