CIV E 331

FINAL EXAM
December 14, 2010

The exam duration is 2 hours (09:00 – 11:00).

The exam is closed book.

Only Faculty of Engineering approved Non-Programmable calculators

are allowed.

Answer each question on the same page as the question. If necessary, the
back side of the sheet facing the question may also be used.

A sewer design information sheet, a formula sheet and a blank sheet are
attached to the end of the exam. They need not be handed in and may be
used for scratch paper.

There are 5 questions of equal value. Attempt all questions.

Clearly state any necessary assumptions.

1) A 40m wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 100 m3/s at a depth of 2.0
m. The channel narrows to 25 m and the bed elevation increases by 0.2 m under
a bridge crossing. Neglecting energy losses, what is the depth of flow in the
constriction? If the constricted flow is not possible, how much deeper would the
upstream flow have to be?
2) Formulate the set of equations for the pipe network shown below using the
method of discharges. The pump performance curve for each pump is
approximated by the equation H P = 20 − 10Q12 ( in m and in m3/s,
flowing from A to B). The effective resistance, based on the Hazen-Williams
formula, of pipes 1 - 4 are 150, 200, 250 and 350 respectively. The demand
outflows at points B and C are 250 L/s each. Use a counter-clockwise convention
for the loop equations.

Do not attempt to solve the equations.

3) The rowing club has made a proposal to construct a low weir across the North
Saskatchewan River to improve their racing course. What is the maximum height
this weir could be so that it would not cause any upstream depth increase during
a flood of 3000 m3/s? Assume that the river has a rectangular cross-section with
a width of 150 m, a slope of 0.0002, and a Manning’s n of 0.036. Clearly state
any additional assumptions that are required.
4) An unlined rectangular channel is to be excavated to provide emergency flood
relief. It must carry 150 m3/s of flow on a slope of 0.0001 and with a Manning’s
n of 0.02. To prevent excessive erosion, the average bed shear stress must be less
than 2.0 Pa. What are minimum width and depth of excavation required? Assume
uniform flow and that the cross-sectional shape is a wide rectangle.
5) Fill in the empty cells in the following sanitary sewer design table. The 2 pipes
flow in sequence from manhole 1 to manhole 2. Base the design on 400 L/d of
sewage generated per person. The population column indicates the additional
service inflowing at the upstream manhole for each sewer pipe. Use Harmon’s
formula ( , P in thousands) for peaking factor. Neglect

inflow/infiltration. The ground surface elevation at all manholes is104.000 m.

Assume that the Manning’s n for the sewers are 0.013. Minimum sewer slopes
and circular sewer flow curves are attached on the next page.

Clearly state a reasonable assumption for any information not provided that you
feel is necessary.
