Final Examination December 1998
Closed Book Examination. No notes or textbooks allowed. Answer all FOUR questions.
NOTE: If you cannot solve an equation, assume a reasonable value and continue!!!
1. Find the depth ya if Yo = 30 m/s, g = Q/5 = 10 mis and ¥; = 30 mis. Note the jet and the
channel are very wide and the flow is steady state. (15 marks)
2. Find the flow rate for each pipe in the following spray system and the power required by the
pump ifthe pump efficieney ty is 90 %. The flow rate from the spay is 0.5 m/s (25 marks)
11 = 500m, Di = 0.5 m,f,= 0.010
£2= 1500 m, D, = 0.5 m, f= 0.010
15 = 1000 m, Ds=0.4m,f;
Ls = 200 m, Ds= 0.4m, fa

1of23. The cross-section of a horizontal channel changes from trapezoidal to rectangular. The
transition is short and smooth thus the energy loss is small. The bottom width of the trapezoidal
section is 5 m, and side slopes are 2H:1V. If the depth in the trapezoidal section is 2 m, find the
depth in the rectangular section with a width of 8 m. Decide whether the flow is subcritical or
supercritical there. Find the minimum width of the rectangular channel without choking, If the
bed level in the rectangular channel is lowered smoothly by 2 m, what will that minimum width
be? Note the flow rate Q= 20 m/s. (25 marks)
4, Water flows at the uniform depth in a river of rectangular cross-section far away from a small
dam. The channel has a slope of 0.001 and a Manning n of 0.020. The depth of water just
upstream of the dam is 5 m and the unit discharge q = Q/ = 10 m’/s/m. Identify the type of
water surface profiles and draw the Energy Grade Line. Find the upstream distance to the
point where the flow depth is 1.05y». Also write necessary equations to find the downstream
distance before the flow retums to its uniform depth. Note: treat each reach as one step and
assume Ry ~ y. (35 marks)
