Project Journal - 3/21/22 to 4/8/22

Goals for these Weeks:


1. Watch another movie (Harry Potter) that should yield similar results as the
previous movies watched (Spider-Man Homecoming and Marvel’s the
Avengers)
2. Go back through the video and recordings and find the areas of most intrigue
and awareness (Gamma waves)
3. Compare the waves from the first set of movies to the second
4. Try to find a correlation between emotions present at certain moments while
in different scenarios
a. Truly the analytical “proof of concept” portion of our project will be
seen here
5. Build the presentation board
a. Cut the foam board, get pictures ready to print, buy and cut
construction paper borders, type up any necessary explanations
6. Finish constructing the PowerPoint
7. Get the rest of the presentation dialed in and ready to go
8. Practice with a group of friends and make sure presentation is under 30
minutes
9. Print and put any journal papers in the sleeves and binder
10. Finish any last touches on the website and make it look professional

My Research and What I Learned:


This research can be split up into two main sections: conclusions made only from
the movie watched in this period of time, and conclusions found by comparing its
results to past ones.

Harry Potter compared to Marvel:


The main findings from the last journal were that happiness stemming from a want
to achieve goals and looking towards a future will create higher amplitudes in the
brain wave readings than happiness that comes from meaningful relationships and
love. While watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, there was a specific section
that fit into these categories. This image is from the scene when Harry Potter, after
working hard to be able to accomplish the first task in the Triwizard Tournament,
comes out on top.
The amplitude displayed within this image is consecutive with that displayed in the
second of the three examples from the last journal, when Tony Stark was getting his
suit taken off by machinery he had built. This further proves the correlation between
amplitude and what kind of happiness is being displayed. There is also another big
difference between this moment and the moments I had picked from the Marvel
movies. The wavelength between repeating sequences in the image above seems to
be much greater than that which was shown in any of the Marvel scenes. The
Marvel graphs were generally pretty skinny with high amplitudes, while this one has
curves that are a bit wider. At first, I tried to attribute this to a change in happiness,
however I believe it is due to a change in engagement. This scene from Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire is very action packed, while the three scenes from the Marvel
movies were more chill. Based on this, I can conclude that there is definitely a
correlation with engagement level and wavelength, while there is also one with
happiness and amplitude.

While analyzing the results for this movie I noticed something I hadn’t noticed in any
other movie’s recordings. As one of the biggest nerds in my generation, I am
coincidentally very unpopular and hardly ever get texts. The only one of these
movies where I got a text or call, was this one.
The section in the middle can be seen to have significantly lower amplitudes and
wavelengths than the sections surrounding it. This was literally the exact instant
where I stopped and looked down at my phone instead of actively watching the
movie. At first, I was inclined to believe that this was a result of decreasing my
engagement. However, after taking a closer look at the data, I realized that this
probably wasn’t the case. Based on the last section, wavelength is the correlation to
engagement, and the wavelength doesn’t change a significant amount between the
two pictures. This means that amplitude (happiness) was a direct factor of change
between these two seconds. This is even consistent with the previous results, as a
text reminded me of my family and relationships (whoever was texting me) and
decreased the amplitude to show the significance of the change. Even in a very
small way, I was astounded to find that this minute detail was further proof of
concept of what we had discovered, and made me sure I was on the right track with
everything that has been concluded.

Accomplishments:
1. Sifted through the remaining data of another movie
2. Watched a final movie and was able to confirm the results from the previous
Journal in a completely different scenario
3. Found a second correlation between emotions and changes in brain waves
based on the different data that was collected all together
4. Finished building the presentation board, the binder, and the Power Point for
the final presentation
5. Got together with friends and practiced the presentation to make sure it was
under 30 minutes

Reflection on Goals and Timeline:
At this point in the project, everything should be absolutely perfect and done. I am
happy to report that this statement definitely applies to our presentation. We
pushed hard after getting a little behind in the last section, and were able to come
out on top. Every bit of research, findings, and presentation preparation (board,
binder, Power Point, etc.) is completely done and we are ready to present. I’d say
that we are in a really good position with our timeline, and our goals and
expectations on what we could complete were absolutely exceeded. This makes it
clear that our previous bumps in the road really didn’t have any effect on our
presentation, and may have even left us in a better position placing just a little
stress on us and motivating us to work harder.
