Badminton Unit Plan

Day 1:
Introductory Activities/Warm-Up
In pairs, line up along the net line and hit back and forth

Skill Development-Concept
Square Game – court movement patterns
In pairs, make a square with 4 spots, 1 bean bag for each pair. The students have to try to
toss the bean bag underhanded and make their partner miss catching the bean bag for a
point.
Progression: switch to tossing a birdie instead of a bean bag so students can see how birdie
flies through the air
Rules:
-Ball has to go above head height
-Person has to get 1 foot out of square each time after they toss it
-Score by making the other person miss the toss, or have the other person throw the ball out
of the square

Culminating Activity
Protect the dots game – movement patterns

-4 spots, one for the tosser, 1 in the middle for the catcher, 2 scoring spots to the left and
right 2m. from the middle spot (diamond shape)
-Tosser stands on his/her spot and tries to throw the bean bag onto one of the scoring spots,
the catcher has to get there and catch it, toss it back, and then go back to their middle spot
-Each partner tosses for 2 minutes and then switch
-Each partner will get two or three 2 minute attempts at catching, depending on time

Rules:
-Tosser has to throw underhand
-Tosser hits the spot, 1 point; catcher catches 4 in a row, 1 point
-If catcher gets 8 in a row and 2 points, move the spots out 1 m. to make game more
difficult
-If the tosser wins 2 points, move the spots in to make it easier for the catcher
-If tosser misses the spot and/or catcher does not catch the beanbag, no points are awarded

Progression:
- Tosser switches to tossing a birdie, with the catcher still using hands.
Progression:
The catcher now uses a racket, but holds it at the neck of the racket. The tosser now tosses
a birdie instead of a beanbag. Instead of competing with one another, the pairs now will
work together to get as many hits in a row as they can, and compete against all the other
pairs. Each partner will have the racket for 2 min intervals, then they will switch.

Closure
Bring the students in; ask them questions about what made the activities successful.
Reiterate our main points of the lesson. Students get changed in the last 5 min of class.

Day 2:
Introductory Activities/Warm-Up
-Gather students and show them how to properly set up the nets.
-Have students find a partner, get a birdie between two and place themselves in one of
the laid out squares.
-Students will have to throw their birdie to their partner who is in a different square.
Students have to work with their partner to get into as many different squares in the
set amount of time.

Skill Development-Concepts

Grip
-Walk students through the grip of the racket
-Students will find a space in the gym and hit the birdie up to themselves in order to get the
feel of the racket and birdie
Forehand
- As a class step students through the forehand shot, using command style - Tips for
the Forehand shot
-Students get into partners, one will watch the other perform their forehand swing and
will point out their strengths and weaknesses to them
Forehand Game
-Students will be in groups of 3, one is the hitter, one the tosser and one with
retriever.
-The tosser with toss the birdie over the net, the hitter will make a forehand shot,
aiming for one of the hoops on the ground, the retriever will gather the birdies back
to the feeder
-The goal is for the hitter to hit 10 birdies putting as many as possible into either of
the hoops. After 10 shots, switch
-Second/third time through students keep track of how many they landed in the hoops

Culminating Activity
-Students will hit with a partner using only forehand shots
-Every 3 minutes players will change courts so everyone has a chance to play
different people

Closure
-Take down nets, put away equipment
-Have students review the grip and the three tips for doing the forehand

Day 3:
Introductory Activities/Warm-Up
-Get students to properly set up the nets.
-Have students find a partner, get a birdie and two rackets, rally using forehand shot
-Ask students to try different shots other than the forehand

Skill Development-Concepts

Backhand
- As a class step students through the backhand shot, using command style - Tips for
the Backhand shot
-Students find a space and try the backhand shot themselves. When they feel they
have a good stroke down, find a partner and rally using the backhand shot in a
space in the gym (doesn’t have to be over net)
Backhand Game
-Students will be in groups of 3, one is the hitter, one the tosser and one with
retriever.
-The tosser with toss the birdie over the net, the hitter will make a backhand shot,
aiming for one of the hoops on the ground, the retriever will gather the birdies back
to the feeder
-The goal is for the hitter to hit 10 birdies putting as many as possible into either of
the hoops. After 10 shots, switch
-Second/third time through students keep track of how many they landed in the hoops
Serve
-As a class, go through the underhand serve. Teacher demo first, and then students can follow
along
-Have 8 students on each court, 2 in each box. Serve the birdie over the net and into the
diagonally opposite box. The student in that box will then serve the birdie back
Culminating Activity
-Students will play a game against a partner, starting with a serve and using both forehand
and backhand shots
-Games will last 3 minutes, and then players will rotate one court so that everyone gets a
chance to play different people

Closure
-Take down nets, put away equipment
-Have students repeat the three steps to both the forehand and the backhand

Day 4:
Introductory Activities/Warm-Up
-Get students to put up the nets
-Review forehand, backhand, serve, then get into partners and hit over net

Skill Development/Culminating Activity

Tournament play:
Students will be teams of 3. Each team will play another team of 3 in 1-on-1 half court
games. The players will play (a vs a, b vs b, c vs c) to 5 points, with the eventual winner
getting a point for their team. After the team has finished playing all the players on the
other team, the 2 teams tally up their points (out of a possible 9), and move on to play a
different team. (See the Official Tournament Scoresheet on materials page)

Closure
- Add up scores from the tournament play, hand in scoresheets
- Take down nets, put away equipment
