Activity 1
1. Give the Hindu-Arabic numeral for the hieroglyphic number below. 2,043,575 (2pts.)

3. Give the Hindu-Arabic numeral for the number
MMCMXLVIII. 2,948 (2 pts.)
IX CDXLIX. 9, 449 (2 pts.)
= 21 x 5 x 5 x 10 x 10 x 10
= 525,000
1 1 0 1 1 0
0 x 20 = 0
1 x 21 = 2
1 x 22 = 4
0 x 23 = 0
1 x 24 = 16
1 x 25 = 32

8. Find the check digit for the UPC code 1-23004-56543 – x. (3 pts.)
1 – 23004 – 56543 – x
= (3) 1 + 2 + (3) 3 + 0 + (3) 0 + 4 + (3) 5 + 6 + (3) 5 + 4 + (3) 3 + x
= 3 + 2 + 9 + 4 + 15 + 6 + 15 + 4 + 9 + x
= 67 + x
Thus, x = 3 since it is the smallest positive integer that is less than 10.
9. Determine if the EAN -13 barcode below is valid. If not, give the correct check digit.
4-800016-653096 (3 pts.)
4 – 800016 – 653096
= 4 + (3) 8 + 0 + (3) 0 + 0 + (3) 1 + 6+ (3) 6 + 5+ (3) 3 + 0 + (3) 9 + 6
= 4 + 24 + 3 + 6 + 18 + 5 + 9 + 27 + 6
= 102
Since the sum is 102, we just simply deduct 2 from the check digit from before which is 6 to
make the sum 100, which is divisible by 10
10. In the ISBN 0-12-072456 –x , solve for the check digit x. (3 pts.)
0 1 2 0 7 2 4 5 6
∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙
10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2
= 0 + 9 +16 + 0 + 42 + 10 + 16 + 15 + 12
= 120
= 120 modulo 11 = 10 remainder 10
= 11-10 = 1
Thus, x = 1
11. Determine if the ISSN 0345-6789 is valid. If not, what should be the check digit x?
(3pts.)
0 345 6 7 8
∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙
8 765 4 3 2
= 0 + 21 +24 + 25 + 24 + 21 + 16
= 131
= 131 modulo 11 = 11 remainder 10
= 11-10 = 1
Thus, x = 1
12. In a book, the ISBN # is 960-0-4 □32-5420-3. What is the missing digit x? (3 pts.)

= 9 + 18 + 0 + 0 + 4 + 3x + 3 + 6 + 5 + 12 + 2 + 0 + 3
= 62 + 3x = Multiple of 10
62 + 3 (1) = 65 10 (5) = 50
62 + 3 (2) = 68 10 (6) = 60
62 + 3 (3) = 71 10 (7) = 70
62 + 3 (4) = 74 10 (8) = 80
62 + 3 (5) = 77 10 (9) = 90
62 + 3 (6) = 80 10 (10) = 100
1. Barcodes reduce the chance of human error because they contain all of the necessary
information about the product.
2. Barcodes are important because it speeds up the process of scanning especially in goods
and provide better data. Since one barcode can be used for inventory and pricing information,
it is possible to quickly obtain data on both.
3. Barcodes are very important because inventories levels can be lowered thanks to barcodes'
ability to track inventory so precisely. Equipment can also be tracked, which saves time and
money by minimizing the amount of time spent looking for it and the amount of money spent
replacing equipment that is believed lost.
