ARCH 3260 BUILDING STUDY AND REPORT

ASSIGNMENT 1: BUILDING STUDIES
SEMINAR 01 (30 %)

Tasks 1A

Students are divided into groups and find three (3) building options to be selected as their main
coursework (The groups will be remained until the final seminar). The building shall have the
following criteria;-

I. Buildings shall be located within Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, any
district in Selangor).
II. Buildings shall be in the range of 18m until 30m in heights,
III. Site acreage shall be within 2.5 acre until 10 acre only,
IV. Buildings shall have more complexity from conventional type of building design in
terms of building function, building design approach, special features and detailing,
building services etc.

Students are required to perform a brief presentation of their (3) options building that comprising
the above aspects on 31st March 2022 at 9.00 a.m. A building will be selected as the students main
coursework.

Tasks 1B

Students are required to undergo a site visit and interview on 7th April 2022. During the site visit
students are required to observe the building on the following aspects;-

1. Project and building background consist of

1.1. Project’s location

1.2. Client, consultants and contractor involved,
1.3. Scale of the project,
1.4. Building’s function,
1.5. Site conditions (explaining the existing features , terrains and surroundings) 1.1.5.Design intentions
brief and ideas
1.6. Works timeframe,
1.7. Project cost ( if available)
1.8. Other Issues that gave impact to the building design in order to meet the client’s needs.
1.8.1. Authorities issues,
1.8.2. Site issues,
1.8.3. Existing features issues,
1.8.4. Neighboring issues etc.
 2. Structural works

2.1. Substructure works (Works below ground),

2.1.1. Foundations,
2.1.2. Substructure’s framework,
2.1.3. Walls and floors system,
2.1.4. Finishing works (special studies)
2.1.5. Any details on special building features.

2.2. Superstructure works (Works above ground).

2.2.1. Superstructure frameworks

2.2.2. Walls and floors system applied,
2.2.3. Finishing works,
2.2.4. Issues found at superstructure works and how they resolve it.
2.2.5. Any details on special building features.

3. M&E Services.
3.1. Types of M& Services used.
Issues –What type and reasons they installed the m&e systems, the advantages and
disadvantages, how did the consultants gave solutions to optimize the utilization of
m&e items towards the building and its function.

4. Environmental control and sustainable features .

4.1. Elaborate the types, material used and methods of installation of the features. ,
4.2. Explain the advantages and disadvantages off the said features,

Students are required to take photos and do some sketches on the existing special features.

Tasks 1C - SEMINAR 01 (30%)

Students are required to present their building study in the seminar 01 on 18th
April 2022 at 9.00 am that covering the related topics stated in the above item
1 and 2 in Task 1B .
