1 PURPOSE

The purpose of this procedure is to perform water insulation of Pile Caps which were located at
basement piles that will be permanently subject to ground water for the Terminal Building piles
without having remarkable problem and testing in conformity with applicable specifications,
approved for construction drawings and relevant contract documents.

2 SCOPE

This procedure has been produced to perform insulation of concrete pile heads which will be
exposed to ground water for the Terminal Building piles with the necessary guidelines and
conditions to ensure that the work covered is carried out in a controlled and professional manner.
The scope of this procedure includes all cleaning activities of subject pile heads, for New Terminal
Building, equipment and pile caps preparation.

 Elastoper EP3mm
 SOPREMA ALSAN FLASHING

4.3.3 Application of Pile Cap

 Surface Preparation
The pile cap`s surfaces should be chipped and if there is a water leakage it must be
drained or properly plugged. The pile caps will be cleaned by compressed air and removed
any loose concrete.
Surfaces must be sound, clean, free from ice, oils, grease, cement laitance standing water
and any loose or friable particles and any other surface contaminants.
The distances from the pile caps up to slab-on-grade level will be filled and compacted in
layers with suitable fill material.

 Basf Masterflex 610

Bottom of the Pile edges as shown in detail-1, Hydro-expansive Water Stop material
(BASF Masterflex 610) must placed . After carrefuly placed Hydro-expansive Water Stop
material (BASF Masterflex 610), the blinding concrete layer will be formed before application
of insulation.

 Formwork Preparation
The form material should be waterproof and resistant to hydrostatic forces of the grout.
Formwork installation should be done against the possible leakage of the cement paste. An
opening should be designed in the formwork with a width of 5 cm at minimum for pouring the
grout.
For preventing the pressure releases, the forms should be placed without any tolerances and
gaps between the concrete and form material.

Grout application can be started after the formwork installation and surface preparation.

 Basf Emaco s55

Mixing and application method

Add enough water into a clean mixing bucket by using a proper water gauge. Add the
powder into the bucket slowly and continuously. Mix the fresh mortar with a proper electrical
mixer (300-600 rpm) for 4 minutes until having a homogenous consistency. Let the mortar
have rest for 4 minutes and re-mix for 30 seconds. All the angels and pile perimeters will be
cast 30x30mm non-shrink mortar fillet.

Mixing Ratios

Emaco s55 1 kg Powder 25 kg bag

Water Quantity < 0,16 liter < 4,00 liter
Mixid Density ~2,20 kg/liter

All application proceedings will be according to the manufacturers’ published data and
as per their instructions. The works will be performed by experienced and approved
professionals. EMACO® S55 should be poured directly into the formwork. Application
thickness should be 1 - 4 cm. For preventing the possible air gaps in the formwork, pour the
grout from single opening and let the air draining. Do not use vibrator for placing the mortar.

Open areas should be protected from the rain, wind, etc. aggressive whether conditions during
the first 24 - 48 hours after finishing repair by using wet clothes, curing membranes etc.

 Basf Thoroseal

Formwork shall be removed and Basf Thoroseal shall be applied to the all surface of Pile
Caps with brush.
Repairing material will be prepared according to its specification and applied to the pile caps
for repairing to the upper edges.

4.3.4 Application of Waterproof Membranes

The substructure and basement envelope and all areas exposed to the ground should be
protected with following external waterproofing membrane system:

Un-bonded Synthetic Membrane

Two layers of fiberglass-reinforced styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) membrane in line
with the BTM Elastobit range of products, or similar approved, installed in line with
Manufacturer instructions.

 The membrane shall be laid on regular, smooth, formwork or a blinded surface, free
from projections.
 The membrane shall be installed with overlaps to allow full fusion of sheets at all joints
and corners to achieve a single homogeneous waterproof barrier. All seams to be fused by
automated machine heating, in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
 The membrane shall allow mechanical fixing to the permanent formwork or temporary
works without damage, and allow for future settlements of the basement structure.
 The Manufacturer’s representative and the Contractor shall both carry out a full
inspection of the substrate preparation and the waterproof system and confirm in writing that
the installation, including joints and corners, is satisfactory and achieves the requirements of
the warranty.
 A system of full compartmentalisation shall confine water travel if a leak occurs in the
membrane. Compartments shall be achieved by fusing the membrane to external water-bars
that shall be cast into the concrete structure. Water bars shall be fully compatible with the
membrane to allow fusing of the joint.
 Once installed, rot proof protection boards, thermal insulation or a sand and cement-
blinding layer, as appropriate, shall permanently protect the inspected membrane.
 All defects during construction shall be made good prior to protection of the
membrane.
Surface Preparation
First of all the wet course area will be observed by crack control. If there, crack will be repair.
Waterproofing membrane should be applied before the surface level control is done.
Surfaces to receive waterproofing shall be prepared in strict compliance with Manufacturer
installation requirements and all approved method statements. All contaminants such as dust,
loose particles, off-cuts, moisture, oils or greases shall be removed from the surface. If
necessary, rough or other unsuitable surfaces shall be improved to satisfy the manufacturer's
recommendations for the product to be applied.

Application
Firstly hydro insulation substrates area will be cleaned as free from dust, oil; particles etc.
for good penetration of bitumen primer. The bitumen primer will be applied uniformly, properly
and sufficient thickness on the cleaned surface. After that primed area will be closed to human
traffic for avoid from damage during the cured time of bitumen primer.

The bitumen membrane two layer application will be perform after one layer primer
bitumen. The fire gun will be used for to melt of bitumen membrane as showed picture 1.
Waterproofing Membrane ( as the spec. Section 071300 Self Adhering Waterproofing) shall be
laid carefully over the lean concrete, under pile caps and precaution shall be taken so that
membrane will not be displaced. Membranes shall be laid parallel and fully bonded to each
other with 100 mm of overlapping joints.

Picture 1
Adhere of bitumen membrane sidelap must
be exactly and properly. Do not allow any
closely pressed air area between bitumen
primer layer and bitumen membrane. The
Bitumen Membrane will be applied up to 10
cm highness plinth elevation.
After welding the membrane 2nd layer 400
gr/m2 Polypropylene geotextile Felt is spread
all over the surface. Geotextile can be applied
150gr/m2 based on the availability of the
material.

Protection Screed

Prevent damage of Waterproof Membrane shall be protected by a layer of screed. A layer of

lean concrete shall be applied min. 50 mm. Nobody shall be allowed to step on and nothing
shall be put on concrete until it is totally hardened.

5. H&S (Health and Safety)

All stuff will be careful;

 Proper PPE will be use during heat insulation work (Safety helmet, safety glass, gloves,
mask exc.)
 Mobile scaffold shall have barrier and wheels shall be locked.
 Safety Harness shall be used as necessary.
 Fire extinguisher will be in place.
