REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related studies and important concepts for literature that

have been found useful in this study. These related studies and literature provide enrichment

to the effects of social networking in the academic performance of grade 7 students.

TIKTOK AS AN ONLINE APPLICATION

As stated by Montag (2021)TikTok (in Chinese: DouYin; formerly known as

musical.ly) currently represents one of the most successful Chinese social media applications

in the world. Since its founding in September 2016, TikTok has seen widespread distribution,

in particular, attracting young users to engage in viewing, creating, and commenting on

“LipSync-Videos” on the app.

Furthermore, Tik Tok is a music creative short video social software. It is a 15-second

music short video community dedicated to young people. Through this software, users can

select songs and shoot 15-second music short video to form their own works and release.

Compared to other short video apps, it has several advantages. Firstly, Tik Tok focused on

the music; it is the first short video app which promoted the music and the content is much

more vertical. Since the content is based on the music, it is more original and interesting. It

differs from the other types of short video apps that have similar and repetitious contents.

Secondly, the shooting steps are simple and easy to operate; any

people can take part in the simple video creation. Additionally, the interface is simple and

the users only need to scroll up and down to select video content, hence it increased the user

stickiness. On the contrary, Kuai app’s interface is complex and it is difficult to handle and
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

use. Thirdly, Tik Tok applied the big data algorithm, so it can follow the users’ browsing

content analysis and preferences and then recommended content to different users. For Tik

Tok, there is still a very broad and far-reaching development space for the future

development.(Hou, 2018).

According to Escober (2020) the pandemic has registered strongly on the social

media app of the moment. Hashtags like #loveinthetimeofcorona and #handwashtunes have

amassed tens of millions of views, and since the implementation of enhanced community

quarantine in Luzon, engagement only seems to have skyrocketed. Since its launch in 2016,

TikTok has become the preferred platform for Generation Z’s knee-jerk response to the

simple fact of existing: content creation. Owned by the Chinese tech company ByteDance,

it was downloaded 738 million times in 2019 alone. The original Chinese version of the app,

Douyin, is blocked off from the rest of the world due to the Chinese government’s firewall

restrictions. No matter what country it’s used in, however, the content on TikTok is generally

uniform: short videos, lasting from a few seconds to a minute, of people dancing, lip syncing,

and acting very pabebe, a word that has no English equivalent but is the perfect adjective for

several of the TikToks I’ve seen, no matter where they’re from. It’s the logical successor to

older apps like Vine and Dubsmash, having located the middle-ground between the former’s

snappy, time-bound humor and the latter’s savvy usage of audio.

AVERAGE TIME PEOPLE USED TIKTOK

According to Sehl(2021)Research from AppAnnie finds that TikTok users with

Android devices spend an average of 13.3 hours streaming on the app per month. This puts

TikTok in fourth position among social media apps, behind Facebook, WhatsApp, and
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

Instagram in terms of cumulative time spent using the app. YouTube may not pose an

“existential threat” to TikTok, but with 2.2 billion monthly active users, the increased

popularity of Shorts on the platform could have an impact. As could Instagram’s Reels

feature, which debuted in India shortly after the country banned TikTok. In November,

Snapchat also launched a TikTok-like feed called Spotlight.

For one thing, the rising trend of social media platform has claimed to make people

becoming less social. The claim states that when youngster’s loss interest in studies they

tend to “show off” through apps like TikTok. This claim can be view as a repeat of generation

of concerns into the behavior of youth and how they interact(Dilon, 2020).

TIKTOK AFFECT THE EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE USERS

According to Tang (2020) several scholars have found that there are various videos

of “positive energy” on TikTok in China, which could bring positive emotions and positive

relationships to TikTok users in China (chen et al., 2020). It was stated that the main

motivations for using TikTok are entertainment and social contact among TikTok users in

China. Entertainment helps users to relax and have fun, which could produce positive

emotions for users. However, TikTok usage still have some issues that cannot be ignored

currently. For instance, TikTok has been the subject of troubling reports about its “dark”

side, which is reportedly filled with child predators, dark patterns, teens bullying and so on.

These issues are very harmful to positive emotions and relationships of users (Perez, 2019).

Researchers have argued that some of the videos on TikTok have an extremely negative

impact on users’ emotions. The negative emotions make some users feel desperate for life.
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

Even when users share videos with each other on TikTok, there is a contagion of negative

emotions among them (Lu & Lu, 2019). Moreover, TikTok over usage has led to TikTok

addiction. Nevertheless, few studies have probed how TikTok usage would affect positive

emotion and relationships among TikTok users in China. To fill in the gap, this current study

aims to examine how TikTok usage would influence positive emotion and relationship

among TikTok users in China.

TIKTOK AFFECT THE MENTAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE USERS

As stated by Silberling (2021) developed in collaboration with International

Association for Suicide Prevention, Crisis Text Line, Live For Tomorrow, Samaritans of

Singapore and Samaritans (UK), the new well-being guide offers more targeted advice

toward people using TikTok, encouraging users to consider how it might impact them to

share their mental health stories on a platform where any post has the potential to go viral.

TikTok wants users to think about why they’re sharing their experience, if they’re ready for

a wider audience to hear their story if sharing could be harmful to them and if they’re

prepared to hear others’ stories in response. Already, TikTok directs users to local resources

when they search for words or phrases like #suicide,* but now, the platform will also share

content from creators with the intent of helping someone in need. As TikTok nods to with

its advice on sharing mental health stories, social media can often be a positive resource,

allowing people who are dealing with certain challenges to learn from others who have gone

through similar experiences. So, despite these platforms’ outsized influence, it’s also on real

people to think twice about what they post and how it might influence others.
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

In addition, TikTok emerged—and caught fire—during lockdown as legions of

bored families desperately seeking fun while stuck at home, discovered the then little-known

app’s quirky videos. Today the short-form video platform, which reportedly has 500 million

users and counting, is giving mental health a new home. Life hacks for depression rooms,

helpful anxiety tutorials, and a realistic look at the sheer torture of living with OCD rituals

are all on view–giving support and reassurance to those suffering along in silence. TikTok’s

content is raw and offers a window into someone else’s world because much of the content

is provided by people struggling with mental health issues themselves. People

with OCD bravely film the painstakingly repetitive routines they put themselves through

every day; others with debilitating depression generously give tours of their hoard-like

“depression rooms,” which thanks to their condition, haven’t been tidied in months (Tzeses,

2021).

TIKTOK AFFECT THE PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE USERS

Among the content creators generating such buzz are doctors and nurses, trainers and

ballerinas, dietitians and foodies, meditation experts and therapists. With the coronavirus

pandemic continuing on, and #stayathome being the hashtag dominating our lives, there

perhaps has never been a better time for these TikTok stars to use their platform to provide

healthy value to the many lives they reach. What differentiates TikTok from other social

mediums is its inherent community focus—something crucially missing in many of our lives

as we shelter in place—because it allows people to practice wellness in synchronicity with

others. Once something like a dance is shared on TikTok, it's easily learned, practiced, and

reposted by other users who bond over it. This is a departure from Instagram, where the mark
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

of a successful post is very much reliant on the number of comments and likes it receives.

But with TikTok, a winning video more so relies on how much people interact with the

content IRL—either by emulating or building on it. TikTok has become a digital destination

for communicating about various categories of your wellness routine—from fitness to food

and mental health to skin care. And sure, a platform like Facebook can foster close-knit

communities, but TikTok offers the opportunity to share your wellness practices and do

them with others. Anybody who likes to dance can connect with someone who's an ocean

away by doing that same (often-complicated) dance, fostering a connection not dissimilar

from they way mirror neurons fire up when we mimic one another. And while TikTok

certainly is not an antidote for the sadness and uncertainty many of us are feeling right now,

it does offer an influx of free wellness practices that simulate the togetherness we yearn for

in a physically and socially distant world (McPhillips, 2020).

Furthermore, TikTok has the power to do more good than harm, so long as users

approach their feeds with a healthy dose of scrutiny. "Having free, readily available access

to fitness instructors and dietitians who are providing quick, bite-size tips on wellness can

not only motivate viewers but can also make information easily available and easier to

understand," says Dr. Wright (McPhillips, 2020).

TIKTOK AFFECT THE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE USERS

According to Yang (2020) several scholars have also exmained the issue of TikTok

addiction: Zhang et al. proved that social interaction anxiety and social isolation have

positive influences on short-form video apps (2019), and Kumar and Prabha predict that

narcissism and insecurity will lead to excessive use of TikTok (2019). However, these
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

studies focused more on the types of personal traits and characteristics of users that are

vulnerable to TikTok and did not consider the design of the 6 platform's interface that may

trigger addiction.

In addition, Barata (2020) an analysis by The New York Times earlier this year

pointed out some particularities of TikTok that will have impact on other social media.

Features of this form of social media, such as group challenges, filters, or hashtags, are

designed to increase the interaction of users – either machines or people. The article notes

that hashtags assume a more effective role in this particular form of social media, as they

serve to connect users around the same joke or challenge. One interesting thing about

TikTok in the context of science communication is that you don’t need to develop an

audience on this platform. Hashtags allow users to see and engage with different groups

and people, instead of interacting only with their social media circle.

Furthermore, you can connect by watching other people’s videos (bonus points for

liking and commenting) and interacting with people who are connecting to your content.

Once on TikTok, I would recommend that a church set up their account as a Pro account so

that you have access to outbound messaging (Reed, 2019)

TIKTOK AFFECT THE SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE USERS

According to Many churches may be looking at their resources and staffing and

wonder how they would be able to create content for TikTok. The good news is that you
Leon Guinto Memorial College Inc.
Senior High School Department

don’t have to initially come up with original content! Repurposing content from weekend

messages is a great way to get started with TikTok (assuming that you stream your weekend

services and can easily get your hands on the video files). Beyond that, a few other easy

content ideas are a short devotion or scripture reading, video to ask how you can be praying

for people, or clips from worship songs. If social media had been around during Jesus’ time

I believe that he would have all over social media! I often dream of a Jesus in the digital age

and imagine him creating videos, blog posts, TikTok videos, and any other kind of content

that could potentially reach those that need to hear the good news of the gospel. (Reed, 2019).

However, what they don’t tell you is spiritual enlightenment is gained through hard

work. Moksha, the ultimate spiritual goal of Hinduism, is to reach a point where you detach

yourself from the feelings and perceptions that tie you to the world, leading to the realization

of the ultimate unity of things—the soul (atman) connected with the universal (Brahman). It

is through these ancient practices that one can truly tap into their psychic abilities, properly

manifest and follow their life path with ease. Many creators are taking advantage of hurt and

hopeful people for their own benefit. Yes, there are true intuitives on the app who truly want

to spread their gifts and knowledge of the universe, to help enlighten other people and to tell

you what you need to hear rather than what you want to hear, but they are never the ones to

pop up on people’s pages (Godinez, 2021).
