INTRODUCTION
Standardized programme to case
management of pneumonia with anti
microbial agents.

The most common cause for ARI is identified


as indoor air pollution and mal nutrition.
BEGINS……
Taken up as a pilot project in 14 districts of the
country in the year 1990.
Since 1992-93 the programme implementation
became a part of CSSM and later with RCH.
The main aim of the programme is to reduce
mortality rate in children due to acute respiratory
infections 20% by 1995 and 40% by the year 2000
OBJECTIVES
To reduce the mortality rate among under fives
due to pneumonia.
To reduce the incidence of acute lower respiratory
tract infection.
To reduce the severity and complication of acute
upper respiratory tract infection.
To rationalize the drug use in ARI
STRATEGIES
Ensure standard care management of pneumonia
in children under 5 years by training medical and
other health professional.
Train peripheral health staff to recognize and
treat cases of pneumonia.
Promote timely referral of severe pneumonia by
the peripheral health staff and community.
Improve maternal knowledge about home
management of cough & cold , recognition of early
danger signs for seeking appropriate care.
Promote immunization, exclusive breast feeding
in the first 4-6 months, proper weaning and
vitamin A administration.
Provision of biogas cooking stoves especially in
the rural house holds.
