Guide Questions:
1. Based from what you have written on the know component of the chart, what
do you know about methods of separating components of mixtures and
compounds?
➢ Method of separating components of mixtures is a procedure or
process of segregating or moving the constituent or part of a substance
which is made up of two or more pure substances.
2. If you were to think of a question that you want to ask about methods of
separating components of mixtures and compounds, what question would that
be?
➢ What are the different methods of separating the components of
mixtures and compounds?

1. Separating sand and water could be done through filtration.
2. Centrifugation involves the used of centrifuge to speed up the settling of
the precipitate using centrifugal or rotating motion.
3. The separation technique that takes advantage of different boiling points in
called distillation.
4. The best way to decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen is by a
process called electrolysis.
5. The sugar in sugar solution can be removed by the process of distillation.
WHAT’S IN
Situational Analysis
Your plane suddenly crushed in an island and luckily you survived. The island is full
of fruit bearing plants but no source of fresh water.
Guide Questions:
1. What would you do to convert the ocean water into potable water? How?
➢ To convert the ocean water into potable water, I should boil the water
and collect the vapor (thermal) or by pushing it through special filters
(membrane).
2. Which separating method could be used to separate water and salt from sea
water?
➢ To separate water and salt from the sea water, I used distillation
separating method. This is a process that involves the evaporation and
condensation of a liquid solvent from a mixture or solution.
WHAT’S NEW
MINI-PERFORMANCE TASK
Observations:
A. I have observed that almost 90% of the soil passed through the sieve. The
material small enough passed through the sieve and the bigger than average
was filtered and remained.
B. With the 1kilogram of soil only about 900bgraks of it was able to lass through
the sieve and about 100 grams of sediments Of small rocks remained on the
sieve hence the 10% of the material.
Questions:
1. What material passes though the holes of the sieve? Why?
➢ Only the water passed through the clothe filter since water was the only
material dense to pass through the clothe.
2. What did you find on the surface of the clothe? Is it safe to drink before
passing through that clothe? Why?
➢ On the surface of the cloth. I found remnants of the soil and sands, and
no water is still unsafe for you have filtered the sands and soil but the
cloth is the right material to filter or remove Microbes and other
colloidal particles.
