Addressing Social Inequalities (Local, National & Global)
Name of the Learner: _____________________________________ Section: _______________________
School: __________________________________________________ Date: _________________________

I. Learning Competency (MELCs)

1. Suggest ways to address social inequalities (local, national and global)
a. Explain the concept of global/social inequality with regards to government
program initiatives.
b. Recognized the different types of social inequalities that will help understanding
government initiatives.
c. Design an action plan in solving community-based problem in social inequality.

II. Key Concepts

Global/Social Inequality and Government

Programs
In this lesson we will be discussing social inequality in connection with government
initiatives addressing the issues concern about wealth and wealth globally. Let us first define
social inequality in a deeper sense. It says here, the presence of unequal opportunities or rewards
present in the society for people of different social status or position called Social Inequality (The
Sociology of Social Inequality. ThoughtCo. part 1). In this sense, let us take in a bigger scope wherein
the unequal distribution of scarce resources and values across territories meaning territorial divide
between the rich resources and the challenging countries resources. It also refers to different or
discriminatory treatment that one person has towards another in terms of their social class,
religion, gender, race, nationality among other things. If you are familiar with Jean Jacques
Rousseau, a French Philosopher wherein in his principle amour propre, deals with the tendency of
the person to compare himself from others drives the person to control and dominate other human
beings increasing his personal happiness. The existence of self- preservation at the same time
pitying for others’ concern lead the person to be more discreet and self-protected. Observed people
in this pandemic time others pity themselves because of their low state and others also leads to self
-preservation. Some wanted to avail the vaccines for the security of their health. Social media
information dictates greater opportunity for the people to survive, especially in the latest news
today that even the President will take the first move to be getting injected with the vaccine made
in Russia assuring the public that vaccine from Russia is
safe and can be trusted. What a brave move from the President himself that his life will be put at
stake if the vaccine will fail. Another indicator that our Government has minimal initiatives for the
teacher’s concern is through their medication of teachers that will be infected by Corona Virus.
There is proper agency like PhilHealth who will take care of confinement and medical assistance
for them. The government role is to take care of its people and yet there is an agency
responsible for the teachers’ welfare, a minimal social protection for the teachers. It has been 5
months, but no assurance of its prevention because people have their own free will to decide to
preserve it or make complacent in the situation. Another theory that Rousseau emphasized is
1
called Social Contract Theory. This theory allows the society to be aligned with the purpose of its
government enjoying common interests among each other. It is composed of the whole body of
citizens that would delegate powers to a king or president achieving “common me” or living belief
in community. Even though there is common belief among people from simple to complex
structures are evidenced still system of inequality exist in the society. And we will consider also in
this aspect the Conflict Theory of Karl Marx wherein the working class might be abused or
exploited by the landowners paving the way the rise disparity or uneven distribution of salaries
and wealth based on their skills, educational attainment and others. In some instance, people
might be saying that people living in America are better off than most of the people living in other
parts of the world. It is true to some evidences but America is not free from social inequalities.

Types of Social Inequality

1. Political Inequality in which the inequality here is no inclusion of civic equality in the eyes of
the law, unequal influence over decisions made by political bodies and the unequal outcomes of
those decisions. (Ex. Giving more favor to some group of elites rather than the ordinary voters.)
(https://political inequality.org)

2. Income and Wealth Inequality in which the outcome or result is concentrated merely on the
individual earnings, it can be analyzed through the different income distributions such as male
vs. female, ethnicity, geographic location, occupation, and historical income. Gini Index is a
popular way to compare income inequalities universally.

3. Life Inequality in which there is evidence of inequalities of opportunities to improve the

quality of life, access to more resources allows individuals to live longer.

4. Inequality of Treatment and Responsibility that will generate problems in agency and
responsibility, unfair treatment of a group/groups lead to purpose act that takes away resources,
opportunities in direct and indirect pattern.

5. Inequality of Membership that usually happen in the membership of faith, family and nation.
Philippines and Japan are both part of Southeast Asia and yet because of their economic
development context they cannot enjoy the same privileges because Japan belongs to powerful
countries as member of Global North than Philippines as Global South.
There are examples of social inequality also happen everywhere like many jobs in the
country are truly dependent on social inequalities like income, gender, educational and racial
inequalities on both regional and national. For Rousseau, inequality exists as a result of private
property and of those who seize the wealth of the world. The more that we think of our personal
property through our income generating, the more that we wanted more for ourselves and started
to see the other side of the fence there would always be inequality. We are human beings that
may compare our achievements and abilities with others started to create inequality. The more
that we acquire assets such as lands, farm businesses may lead the government to do the
initiatives of protecting it, but for others this will be a form of oppression and injustices.

II. Key Concepts

Social Contradictions and

Tensions
In this lesson we will be discussing Social Contradictions and Tensions as source of
cultural, social, and political change. This is to identify how human respond to these emerging
challenges in the contemporary society. Change in various aspects of society may occur due to
the interplay of different factors that affect social relationships, culture, and politics. In this
lesson, you will learn how contradiction and tension can bring about societal change.

Social conflict (or contradiction) and tension are disturbances believed to be against
social norms and standards and are caused by a group of people. As society evolves, numerous
issues have become an apparent area of concerns by most of the population.

As such, irreconcilable differences gradually develop into larger societal challenges that
need to be addressed and resolved. Should these social conflicts and tensions fail to be taken
care of, it is highly likely that more chaos and disorganization will occur in society.
