Changes
The following changes have been made as compared to Test Specification PV 3316, 1992-08:
─ Standard editorially revised

Previous issues
1971-03, 1992-08

1 Scope
This Test Specification defines the evaluation classes for crack formation in rubber products
following exposure to ozone.
Numerical notation according to ISO practice (see VW 01000).

2 Test
The following evaluation classes should be referred to when assessing cracks:

─ Evaluation class 0: Free of cracks

─ Evaluation class 1: Fine cracks
─ Evaluation class 2: Distinct cracks
─ Evaluation class 3: Severe cracks
─ Evaluation class 4: Very severe cracks

If it should be necessary, transitional classes such as 0 to 1, 1 to 2 etc. can also be selected.

An evaluation 0 to 1 is used for superficial cracks or extremely fine cracks. Figure 1 shows
characteristic examples of crack evaluation.
Evaluation is conducted with the relevant sample clamped in position. If any particular crack
structures are present, it is advisable to make a note of the facts, e.g. "crack areas with star-
shaped structure". If necessary, the depth, width and number of cracks can also be entered. Details
such as number of cracks > 100 or < 20 etc. are permissible.
Special mention should be made in the event of ozone cracking caused by visible processing
defects and surface flaws on the rubber parts.
