 An act of conveying meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of
mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules

 Keith Davis: Communication is a process of passing information and understanding
from one person to another.

Communication Theory Framework

Let try us examine communication through the following viewpoints:
 Mechanistic - The mechanistic view point says that communication is simply the
transmission of information from the first party to the second party. The first party being the
sender and the second party being the receiver.
 Psychological - According to the psychological view point, communication is simply not the
flow of information from the sender to the receiver but actually the thoughts, feelings of the
sender which he tries to share with the recepients. It also includes the reactions, feelings of
the receiver after he decodes the information.
 Social - The social view point considers communication as a result of interaction between
the sender and the receiver. It simply says that communication is directly dependent on the
content of the speech. “How one communicates” is the basis of the social view point.
 Systemic - The systemic view point says that communication is actually a new and a
different message which is created when various individuals interpret it in their own way and
then reinterpret it and draw their own conclusion.
 Critical - The critical view point says that communication is simply a way with the help of
which an individual expresses his power and authority among other individuals.

world

The issue with regards to communication does exist if there is no understanding is a

wide discussion because of several technicalities and considerations. Well, in my own
understanding as a student, technically there is communication. If part of the
understanding means a message has been sent. For communication it is not required to
understand the message, only for it to be received. So, in technical details, yes, there is
communication without understanding. However, it is futile. But there are plenty of times
when you ‘send’ a message which is then misunderstood. This will happen on a daily basis
for you and everyone. I see this a lot, for example recently when institutional racism has
been discussed versus individual racism under the common name of ‘racism’. Both sides
spoke towards each other using the simple shorted version being just but ‘racism’.
Therefore, the side with the institutional racism clashed with the individual racism due to
misunderstood concept of ‘racism’. Basically, what we saw with all the protests in the US.
You could argue there was definitely communication going on there, but it was not
understood. People acted like it was, but really, it wasn’t. That’s why there is still no
solution
