Filipino and Filipino Culture

• It is one of the most important


works on the early history of the
Spanish colonization of the
Philippines.
• It was published in Mexico in 1609,
which is made up of eight chapters.
• It was annotated by Jose Rizal, with
a prologue by Dr. Ferdinand
Blumentritt.
• It was authored by Antonio de
Morga.

MORGA
• “They prefer to eat salt fish which
began to decompose and smelly”.

RIZAL
• It is called bagoong, and all those who
have eaten it and tasted it know that it
is not or ought not to be rotten.
MORGA
• A lawlaw is a very small fish which is
netted, dried in the sun or air, then
cooked in various ways.

RIZAL
• A lawlaw is called a salted and dried
sardine. He said that Morga seems to
refer to tawilis of Batangas or dilis.
MORGA
• Natives drink heavily, Morga said
they all end up drunk during wedding
feasts.

RIZAL
• No matter how inebriated they seem
to be after a gathering or a feast,
they can always find their way home.
MORGA
• There were no kings nor lords in these islands
who had total control like the monarchs of
Europe.
• Individuals or families belonging to principals
formed friendships and relationships with
each other and sometimes, due to
differences, even wars.

Chinese and other foreign
merchants.

• Morga must have meant Sinamay,
which was woven from abaca
thread that comes from the trunk,
not the leaves.

• Natives sell artifacts to the
Japanese.
• Igorots felt that their golds was
kept more securely in the ground
than in their own houses.

• Agreed
• The Igorots are right.
MORGA
• Crocodiles that are larger in size are
superior to the natives.
• The native set traps on the boarders
and rivers near their settlements.
RIZAL
• There had been friars eaten by
crocodiles while indios escaped.
• It is just like other nations have their
respect to lions and bears.
MORGA
• Taking a bath regardless of the
weather could be harmful to
their health.

RIZAL
• Because the Philippines is a
tropical country, Rizal
emphasized that Filipinos bathe
regularly.
MORGA
• The groom contributes a dowry, that he had
received from his parents, while the bride
does not bring anything until she inherits
some from her parents.

RIZAL
• The groom gave the bride’s parents a dowry
because they were losing a precious
daughter.
• A Filipino woman helps his husband and is
not seen as a burden when they get married.
MORGA
• They buried the dead in their own houses
keeping their bodies and bone for a long
time.

RIZAL
• We find it much more natural and pious.
MORGA
• Bisaya draw patterns
first before putting black
powder where the blood
oozes.

• He said that a house with the parents
and children in room together is called
“bahandin”.
• According to him, Inasawa is a wife
married to a native man.

RIZAL
• In Tagalog, a house is called
“pamamahay”.
• Asawa is the term called for the wife of
a native man.
