Pharmacists are often the first point-of-contact for patients with health
inquiries.Thus pharmacists have a significant role in assessing medication
management
inpatients,andinreferringpatientstophysicians.Theserolesmayinclude,butarenotlimit
edto:

• Clinicalmedicationmanagement,includingreviewingandmonitoringofmedicat
ionregimens.
• Assessmentofpatientswithundiagnosedordiagnosedconditions,andascertainin
gclinicalmedication managementneeds.
• Specializedmonitoringofdiseasestates,suchasdosingdrugsinkidneyandliverfai
lure.
• Compoundingmedicines.
• Providingpatientswithhealthmonitoringandadvice,includingadviceandtreatme

HOSPITALPHARMACY

Hospital pharmacies are pharmacies usually found within the premises of a hospital.
Hospitalpharmaciesusuallystockalargerrangeofmedications,includingmorespecializedandinvestig
ational medications (medicines that are being studied, but have not yet been
approved),thanwouldbefeasibleinthecommunitysetting.Hospitalpharmaciestypicallyprovidemedi
cations for the hospitalized patients only, and are not retail establishments and
thereforetypicallydonotprovideprescriptionservicetothepublic.Somehospitalsdohaveretailpharma
cies within them, which provide over-the-counter as well as prescription medications
tothepublic, butthesearenottheactualhospitalpharmacy.

HOSPITALPHARMACIST

Pharmacists, also known as chemists (Commonwealth English) or druggists (North


Americanand,archaically,CommonwealthEnglish),arehealthcareprofessionalswhopracticeinphar
macy,the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use. A pharmacist is
amemberofthehealthcareteamdirectlyinvolvedwithpatientare.Pharmacistsundergouniversitylevel
education to understand the biochemical mechanisms and actions of drugs, druguses, therapeutic
roles, side effects, potential drug interactions, and monitoring parameters. Ahospital pharmacist
is the person who instructs and counsel on the proper use and adverse effectsofmedically
prescribed drugs and medicinesfromhospital.

EMERGENCYWARDS

Anemergencydepartment(ED),alsoknownasanaccident&emergencydepartment(A&E),emer
gencyroom(ER),emergencyward (EW)orcasualtydepartment,isamedicaltreatmentfacility
specializing in emergency medicine, the acute care of patients who present without
priorappointment; either by their own means or by that of anambulance. The emergency
departmentis usually found in hospitalor otherprimary carecenter.

Due to the unplanned nature of patient attendance, the department must provide initial
treatmentfor a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life-threatening
and requireimmediate attention. In some countries, emergency departments have become
important entrypoints for thosewithoutother means of accesstomedicalcare.

O.P.DPHARMACY
OPD means an Out Patient Department of a hospital. It is the section of the hospital
wherepatientsareprovidedmedicalconsultationandotheralliedservices.Thepatientwhodoesnotacqui
rebed in thehospital.

FIRSTAID

Firstaidistheassistancegiventoanypersonsufferingasuddenillnessorinjurywithcareprovidedtopreservelife,
preventtheconditionfromworsening,ortopromoterecovery.
Administerimmediatefirstaidtoinjuredorexposedpersonnelusingthefollowingsteps:

1. Moveinjuredpersonnelonlyifnecessarytoprevent theirexposuretofurtherharm.
2. For spills affecting small portions of skin, immediately flush with flowing water for at least
15minutes.If no visible burn exists, wash with warm water and soap, removing any jewelry
tofacilitateproper decontamination.
3. Forspillsonclothesorlargeareasofskin,quicklyinitiateshoweringwhileremovingallcontaminated
clothing, shoes and jewelry.It may be necessary to cut the clothes off in someinstances to
preventcontamination oftheeyes.
4. Contaminated clothes should be laundered when possible (at work, separate from other
clothing,or use a contracted laundering service), decontaminated or discarded. Never take
contaminatedclothinghome.
5. Do not use creams, lotions or salves, except to neutralize the spilled material (e.g.,
calciumgluconate gel for hydrofluoric acid exposure and polyethylene glycol [PEG 300] for
phenolexposure).
6. For splashes into the eyes, immediately irrigate the eyes at an eyewash station for at least
15minutes.Holdtheeyelidsawayfromtheeyeball,movingeyeinalldirectionstowashthoroughlybehind
theeyelids.
7. Ifnecessaryadministerartificialrespiration,butonlyifCPRtrained.

1. Inallcases,theexposedorinjuredpersonmustseekmedicalattention.
2. RelevantsafetyinformationsuchasanSDSshouldaccompanytheperson.
3. Notifytheinjuredperson'ssupervisorassoonas possible.
4. Fornon-lifethreateninginjuriesorillnesses,seeReportingAccidents&Injuries

DISPENSINGPHARMACY

Dispensingincludesallofthestepsnecessarytotranslateamedicationorder(prescription)intoanindivid
ualizedmedicationsupplythatisbothsafeandappropriate.Belowisaverybriefdescriptionof
whatatypicalvisittoyour localpharmacymay look like:
Step 1:The pharmacist will ask if you have visited this pharmacy before. If the answer is
‘No’,youwillbeasked tofilloutaconsentform.Thisallowsthepharmacisttofillyourprescription.Ifthe
answer is ‘Yes’, they will ask for an identifier (birthday or home address). This allows for
aneasysearchwithinthepharmacy's computersystemforyourprescriptionrecords.
Step2:APharmacytechnicianwillentertheprescriptionintoyourprofile,checkingthe:doctor’sinforma
tion, medication/dose, indications from the prescriber, and quantity of the script. Thepharmacy
system will check for possible interactions or other potential issues through the NovaScotiaDrug
Information System.

Step 3: The medication bottle will be scanned and packaged with the Lot and Expiry.
Themedication is then counted for the designated quantity, labeled and handed off to the
pharmacisttobechecked.
Step 4: The pharmacist will perform a check of your medication, reviewing previous usage
(ifany), and information entered at the beginning work station. They will also print off
counselingdocuments to providethepatientwith moreinformation onthemedication.
Step5:Thepatientwillpickuptheirmedicationandhaveaquickconversationwiththepharmacisttoensur
eproper communicationandcompliance.

OutcomeofTraining

Trainingisanimportantpartofmodernhealthcareservicescarryingandisoftencitedasawaytoimprove
care quality. To date, various training methods have been used to impart skills relevantto human
health practice in a variety of Medical and Paramedical health professionals. However,patient
outcomes are rarely used in evaluating the effectiveness of the different training methodsused,
making it difficult to assess true utility. A variety of health professionals were trained inskills
including ‘communication’, ‘diagnoses, and ‘referral’ to name but a few. In the majority
ofstudiesstaffskilllevelimproved.Thesefindingsholdimplicationsforthedesign,implementation,and
evaluationof training forhealthcare staff.From hospital training I havelearnedaboutfollowing:
1. Variousmedicines,useandtheirstorage
2. Administrationofparenteral
3. Emergencycasemanagement
4. Handlingofbiomedicalwaste
5. Distributionofmedicines
6. ConsultingmannertoDoctorsaboutpatientsandtheirmedicines
7. Patientcounseling
8. HandlingofNebulizationmachineandotherInstruments

Inthissense,thePharmaceuticaldivisionofaHospitalisspecialandimportantforprovidingthecareto
patientsinpropermanner.
