Handout - Discussion Practice
Group discussion is a process in which a group of people sit together and discuss various aspects of a given topic. The
purpose of the task is to explore a topic and share a variety of perspectives to the topic. Speakers are free to agree
or disagree on others’ opinions.
Team members do research on the topic and gather relevant information (facts & figures, photos, etc.) that will
support their position. Each speaker actively participates in the discussion by making arguments, supporting their
arguments with evidence, asking questions to other speakers and responding to other speakers’ questions or
arguments. The teams have 2 weeks to prepare for the performance.
Watch the following sample video “How to discuss a topic in a group” prepared by five English teachers to show you
how to discuss a topic in a group. You'll learn how to give your opinion, interrupt, contradict, and more.
(You can also refer to ‘PPT – Tips for a Discussion’ to watch the same video under the label TIPS FOR SPOKEN
PERFORMANCE on the main page on Harmanlanmış.)
PRACTICE
Work in groups of 4-5 speakers. Choose one of the topics below, read the relevant pdf document for your group’s
topic, which will guide you and give you some ideas about the topic. Then, do research on the topic to gather
relevant information and decide which side you will support. Discuss the topic in your group in class. Don’t forget
to use phrases/expressions you have learnt. (You can refer to ‘PPT-Tips for a Discussion’ for preparation on the
main page of L1 Spring on Harmanlanmış.)
***The pdf documents are given in this practice section just to guide you and give you an idea about how to
prepare for your Discussion Session, which will start in Week 13. Your group topic will be given 2 weeks before the
performance, but you WILL NOT be given any pdf documents and you will do your own research about your topic.
