SED 397/398 Instructional Activity #1

Assignment Confirmation:

January 28th, 2022: 10 AM - 11:30 AM @ Sandra Day O’Connor High School

a. SPRING SPORTS ASSEMBLY

I chose to attend Sandra Day O’connor High School’s Spring Sports Assembly as my community

event. This event was a lot of fun to attend, I got the chance to stand among the teachers and

observe students while the assembly went on. The atmosphere was one of excitement and

eagerness on behalf of the students. Teachers took part in activities alongside students, and a

very positive, fun atmosphere enveloped the entire event. The school administration played a

more security/behavior type role during the assembly. I saw several students asked to come stand

among the Admin staff due to something happening during the assembly. I think this event ran

smoothly however I would have offered a later assembly with all of the students and even

invitations to parents. The assembly as it was, was split into three separate times to limit the

amount of students. Obviously this may be due to covid concerns, however it would have been

an even further extended community event if this was used. In conclusion, this was a very

exciting and beneficial experience, and a functional peak into the aspects that can build “school

spirit”.
Reflection for Instructional Activity #1:

For this activity I completed the attendance at a community event, which was the Spring

Sports Assembly at Sandra Day O’Connor High School. This event was really beneficial to me as

a future educator, as assemblies are a major part of the school spirit and cultures of many high

schools. Students were having a great time interacting with each other as well as the rest of the

school through activities, games and chants. It was especially exciting to see the fervor and

excitement students possessed at this event. Within the classroom at the higher grade levels it

is often difficult to find that same excitement for learning. However, it was on full display here.

After completing this activity I have nothing but positive reflections about the experience. It

reminded me very much of the assemblies we used to have at my high school. It was great to

re-enter that environment in a different capacity.
