Assignment 1: Project Management S2022 MGMT 460

Goal by end of March & Steps Taken

1. Reduce
The first step is to create less waste and this will be achieved by reducing consumption or
purchasing less. In my household, the goal will be achieved by choosing products with
less or no packaging. Turning off lights when not in use would also help reduce. I will
also consider using products that can be reused. Though I rarely use paper work in
recording information or when sending mails, I will fully eliminate the use of papers. I
will also practice to consciously use less water. For instance, I don’t have to keep water
running while brushing in the morning. Similarly, while washing dishes, I will avoid
running water. I also purchased a bike to save on my gasoline use. This might be a hard
habit to stop but, with time, I will achieve my goal. By reducing the amount of waste
from my house hold, it will have an automatic benefit to the environment.
2. Reuse
This involved the use of an item that can be used again several times before purchasing
another. For items such as clothes, containers, or cans, I had to make sure that I use them
to maximum before disposing them. The reusing process also included using items to do
other tasks apart from what they are meant for. For instance, giving out old clothing to
friends or charity, buying beverages that are in returnable containers and avoiding those
with plastic cans, using cloth bags for shopping several times before disposing. I will also
be using old T-shirts as rags to help clean my house instead of purchasing a rag.
3. Recycle
Recycling involves reusing materials such as glass aluminum and plastic in a new form. I
will be purchasing products that can be recycled. I will also be creating new and useful
products from used milk cartons, soda cans, and cloth shopping bags.

Measurement of Success
Generally, I expected a reduction of costs used on electricity in my house and cost on
gasoline for my transportation.
 Reduced amount spent purchasing gasoline by using a bike on short distances
travels
 Reduced electric bills

Barriers
1. I also had a hard time measuring and recording data
o The main barrier I encountered was tracking down the information. I really had a hard
time tracking the savings and calculating the cots. Some tracking details required me
to record and note the progress each day. The two months of tracking were made even
worse when I had to calculate costs and make conversions from the measuring unit
into the $ unit. Planning, execution and closing of a project was a hectic task.
2. I had not been used to biking and I sometime forgot that I had a bike and got myself
driving
3. Had a hard time looking for market to sell my old appliances so I could purchase new
efficient house appliances.
Overcoming Barriers
1. Improved Tracking Tool
o To overcome the barriers I had to structure a better tracking tool that would help me
track my progress whenever needed. I also managed to seek a hand of help in
planning and execution of the project from my close friend who is also my roommate.
I also consulted from several classmates who also offered me with helpful ideas on
my project.
2. Calculations
o Calculating the costs was also made easier through a combined effort from me and
my friend who is a very good mathematician. To record tracking details each day of
the month, I had an excel chart that I had earlier created to help me record the details.
3. Adapting to changes
o My previous habit was a barrier because it always drug me back. For instance, I am
use to brush while my tap is running. The conscious part of my mind had a hard time
being alert and used to the practice of swathing the tap on and off.
Next Month Goal
The three goals I plan to achieve this month are;
1. Discuss how you overcame those barriers or resistance to change from others to
demonstrate change management skills
2. Visit office hours to assist you with data entry, embedding reports, evaluating utility
expense, and the outcome of your project goals. We will be working on these each
Thursday during class.
3. Conclude how this assignment improved your quality of life, and be sure to include the
Triple Bottom Line perspective.

4. List three new goals you will implement next month.
