MONITORS
A monitor is a directional control device which deliv-
ers a large capacity stream from a nozzle. It is
mounted on a stationary support at grade or elevat-
ed. A monitor can be directed by one person and
may be fed solution by permanent piping or hose.
Manual Monitors
The basic monitor is a manually-operated device
(Figure 3-5). It contains a swivel joint for vertical
movement (elevation) and a swivel joint for horizon-
tal movement (rotation) to direct the stream of
foam/water to the required area.

Remote-Controlled Monitors
Remote-controlled monitors (Figure 3-7) typically
operate using an electric joystick controller and an
electrically-actuated hydraulic manifold to allow oper-
ation at a safe distance from the fire. The monitor is
operated by hydraulic motors or pistons located at
the rotation and elevation joints. On some monitors,
the nozzle stream pattern can also be controlled
remotely using a special hydraulically-operated
nozzle.
