3.3.3 Static Load Test

Based on Section 2.4.6, Part 2 of Division 2 of the Technical Specifications,

the maximum testing load for PHC Piles and Steel Pipe Piles are 280 ton x
200% and 500 ton x 200%, respectively.

However, according to Engineer’s conducting f or Static Load Test, actual working

load shall be used instead of 280T and 500T. The factor of safety of 200% shall be
applied to PHC 700, PHC 800, SPP 900 and SPP 1000. Based on these, the test
loadings per pile type are as below:

Pile Type Test Loading (Short Term)

PHC D700 1,800 kN x 200% = 3,600kN

PHC D800 2,585 kN x 200% = 5,170 kN

SPP D900 3,858 kN x 200% = 7,716 kN

SPP D1000 4,002 kN x 200% = 8,004kN

Thus the proposed incremental and decremental loading in accordance with the
minimum time for loading are as follows:

The test will be carried out by the application of an axial static load applied to a
single pile by means of compression method. By this method, the vertical pile
shall be loaded by means of a hydraulic jack acting against a system of
kentledges which are built on top of the pile. In the test, the weight of
kentledges will be used as the reaction system. Loading procedures shall apply
as follows:

(a) Before testing, the head of the test pile shall be prepared to be level and
even.

THI VAI INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CARGO TERMINAL

Page 11 of 17
PENTA-RINKAI JOINT VENTURE METHOD STATEMENT FOR TEST PILE DRIVING & STATIC LOAD TEST

(b) Each load increment and decrement shall be held for specified interval
time. Reading of gross settlement, load and time are taken and recorded
immediately before and after application of each load.

(c) Following each application of load increment, the load shall be maintained
at the specified value for not less than the time shown in the above table.

(d) During loading and unloading, the readings of time and settlement of pile
head we are taken and recorded for every increment and decrement at the
following intervals under constant load, in accordance with Section 2.4.7 of
the Technical Specifications:

a. First 1 hour : at 15 minutes interval

b. Next 6 hours : at 30 minutes interval
c. Next 24 hours : at 1 hour interval

(e) Test shall be discontinued if the hydraulic jack and gauges are found to be
defective.

3.3.4 Test Report

In accordance with Section 2.4.8 of the Technical Specifications, within 24

hours after completion of the load test or as soon as practicable, the Contractor
shall submit to the Engineer three (3) copies of the report including the
following information:

a) Records on load observation, settlement, recovery and time

b) Reading adjustments due to calibration, if any
c) Load graph against settlement/recovery
d) Time graph against settlement
e) Any other information affecting the integrity of the pile

In accordance with Section 2.4.10 of the Technical Specifications, the pile shall
be deemed to have failed the load test due to any one of the following
occurrences:

a) If under design load the maximum pile settlement exceeds 20mm.

b) If residual settlement after removal of design load exceeds 10mm.

THI VAI INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CARGO TERMINAL

Page 12 of 17
PENTA-RINKAI JOINT VENTURE METHOD STATEMENT FOR TEST PILE DRIVING & STATIC LOAD TEST

c) If the pile is found to have deflected from its original position or incurred
other damage or distortion which in the opinion of the Engineer, could
impair its usefulness.

However, with reference to Section 2.4.10(1) of the Technical Specifications,

the Contractor proposed that due to elastic pile compression, the maximum
settlement limit of 20mm cannot be met. Determination of Elastic Pile
Compression for each pile is as follows:

Where:

= Elastic Pile Compression (mm)

P = Test Load (N)

L = Pile Length (mm)

E = Young’s Modulus of Pile (N/mm2)

A = Cross-sectional Area of Pile (mm2)

a = 0.014 x (L/D) + 0.72

The Contractor therefore proposes the following maximum pile settlement for each
pile type as follows:

3.4 TEST RESULTS

As stated in Section 2.3.3, Part 2 of Division 2 of Technical Specifications, the

ultimate resistance of the pile driven in place shall be computed by Hiley
formula, and as follows:

Where:

 RU = Ultimate Resistance in kilonewtons

 MR = Mass of hammer in kilograms
 H = Height of free fall of hammer in meters
 EF = Efficiency of fall of hammer
 MP = Mass of pile in kilograms, including helmet
 E = Coefficient of restitution

 S = Final set of pile in millimeters per blow using an average of 5

consecutive blows for drop hammers

 C1 = Temporary compression allowance for pile head and cap in

millimeters
 C2 = Temporary compression of pile in millimeters
 C3 = Temporary compression of ground in millimeters

 The values of the coefficients EF, E and C1 which are dependent upon the
type of equipment used, and the batter of piles, shall be approved by the
Engineer.

 Coefficients C2 and C3 shall be measured by the Contractor on a

temporary compression card for each pile, during driving, simultaneously
with the measurement of set per blow

  = Correction factor from Hiley formula and PDA

into working criteria for actual pile driving works shall be as follows:

THI VAI INTERNATIONAL GENERAL CARGO TERMINAL
