COURSE OUTLINE

1. Course Title: English Morphology and Syntax

3. Units of Credit: 2 (Theory: 1.0 and Practice:1.0)
4. Entry Level: 3rd year students
5. Time Allocation:
- Theory: 15 periods
- Practice: 15 periods
- Autonomous learning: Students are encouraged self-study while subject to the
teacher’s periodical assessment. The minimum time for self-study is 60 hours.

6. Prerequisites: Students are required to have completed Introduction to Linguistics


in Vietnamese, Listening 1-5, Speaking 1-5, Reading 1-5, and Writing 1-5 as well
as courses in basic components of language such as Phonetics – Phonology.
7. Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will achieve:

7.1. Knowledge: Students will be able to:


- fully understand the basic rules of word formation and the functions of words;
- fully understand the structure of words, clauses, and sentences;
- fully understand the basic rules of making phrases, clauses, and sentences from
words.
7.2. Skills: Students will be able to:
- analyze and categorize words;
- apply word forms and word functions correctly;
- analyze the structure of words, clauses, and sentences in economic documents;

- develop teamwork skills;

- present, discuss and protect their own ideas;


- improve self-study, reference search and independent research capabilities.
7.3. Attitude: Students should:
- be committed to protecting and enhancing the beauty of language in everyday
conversations as well as in business situations;
- develop themselves to become good and effective communicators;
- be passionate about self-study and independent research;
- try their best to improve English as well as other foreign languages proficiency;
- contribute to the concerned field of study.
8. Course Description:
8.1. Morphology: This module aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of
the English morphology, thus aiding them in applying the knowledge to their
teaching, translating, or research later on.
8.2. Syntax: This module aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of the
English syntax such as the concepts of ‘phrase’, ‘sentence’, components of
phrase and sentence, as well as kinds of clauses,…
The course is conducted through several teaching and learning methods such as
lecture, practice, group discussion, class discussion and presentation. Besides,
students are also encouraged to study and do more research off class in their own
time.
9. Performance Requirements: Students are required to:
- attend class regularly;
- complete homework and class assignments;
- participate in class discussion and other activities.
