1. Why are platform scale and volume tank be calibrated?

Unfortunately, even the highest quality scale won't be accurate forever. ... Calibration is the
process of testing the scale, to ensure the level of accuracy you require. In a laboratory setting,
where results are dependent upon exact weights, scale calibration is of particular importance.

Balance or scale calibration is essential to achieve accurate weighing results. Ignoring this
important service activity turns measuring into guesswork. In other words, it is negligent to
weigh with a non-calibrated balance or scale. The accuracy of balances and scales becomes less
reliable over time.

The goal of calibration is to minimise any measurement uncertainty by ensuring the accuracy of
test equipment. Calibration quantifies and controls errors or uncertainties within measurement
processes to an acceptable level.

Unfortunately, even the highest quality scale becomes less reliable over time. This is why
calibration is important to ensure the level of accuracy you require. In a laboratory setting,
where results are dependent upon exact weights, scale calibration is of particular significance.

2. What causes the errors in their reading?

The accuracy of weighing scales can diminish over time through regular use, dust build-up or
age; a process often referred to as 'drift'. Some of the errors in reading factors are caused by:

Platform scale
a. Load cell accuracy.
b. Load factors.
c. Environmental forces.
d. Interference with signal transmission.
e. Instrumentation and control.
f. Human error

4. Explain the importance of determining the density of materials in engineering applications.

Measuring density is very important for many different industries especially in
engineering because the density measurement will help determine the characteristics of a
material, for example, whether the material will float or sink. Knowing the density of a material
helps in determining the mass and volume of a material, all of which are extremely important
measurements in engineering. Additionally, density measurements are used when weight and
weight distribution are important. This may include the construction of ships, buildings,
airplanes and other modes of transportation. Density measurements are also useful when
determining how much force is required to move a liquid through piping or tubing which are all
a portion of an engineering application.
