Minh Hiếu, Phan Thị Bích Thủy.

Compare the essay with paragraph:

- An essay no more difficult than paragraph except that it is longer.


- The principles of organization of both the same, so if you can write a good
paragraph, you can write a good essay.
- An essay has unity and herance, just as the paragraph does.
However, if you are not good at paragraphs, you are also not good at essays too! So
try your best!
An essay has three main parts:
- An introduction (or introductory paragraph) has general statements and thesis
statement.
+ general statement to make reader pay attention
+ thesis statement = topic of paragraph: gives the reader the idea of the content
of the essay = it also is the writer’s point of view on the topic
- A body (at least one, but two or more paragraphs better) has topic sentence, support
idea (and conclusion).
+ Each body in paragraph subdivision or subtopic of the topic
+ The number of paragraphs depending on the number of subtopics
- A conclusion (concluding paragraph) is restatement or summary of the main points
or final comment.
-When you want to link the paragraph and make the essay more coherent, you should
use transition signals and the repeatition of key nouns.
