80 GROUND RULES FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH

Checklist for ETHICS


When considering the ethics of the research you should feel confident
about answering ‘yes’ to the following questions: 
1 Does the research abide by the laws and respect the cultural
norms of the society within which the research is conducted?
2 Has an appropriate code of research ethics been adopted
and acknowledged?
3 Has approval been obtained from the relevant Research
Ethics Committee (or Institutional Review Board)?
4 Will the data be collected via legal and legitimate means?
5 Will the research be conducted with professional integrity
(honest, objective, unbiased)?
6 Will participants be supplied with sufficient information
about the research?
If not, can this be justified in relation to the nature of the
research?
7 Will participants give their (written) consent to participation
in the research?
If not, can this be justified in relation to the nature of the
research?
8 Will the research avoid any misrepresentation or deception?
If not, can this be justified in relation to the nature of the
research?
9 Have the interests of the research subjects been protected
through:

Avoiding stress and discomfort?


Maintaining the confidentiality of information?
Protecting their anonymity?
Avoiding undue intrusion?
10 Have reasonable steps been taken to maintain the security
of the data?
