Slicing a .stl file in Cura with suitable parameters and 3D printing using FDM
process

Aim:

To print 3D model using addictive manufacturing process on Creality Ender 3 FDM printer

Software Requirements:

Ultimaker Cura

Procedure:

1. Export .STL (Simple Triangular Language or streolithography) from PTC Creo Parametric
software or anyother 3D modelling software.
2. First we need to setup various machine properties in Ultimaker CURA 4.4 software as
below:
• Goto printer name option - Add printer - select "Add a non-networked printer" - select
Creality 3D - select Creality Ender 3 option - select add.
• Machine settings window will appear after select add button. Machine settings are
standard settings of particular 3D printer added initially and click next.
• Select folder symbol and add .stl file. It will appear on grid plane as shown in below
Picture.

3. Orientation of model:
(Note: follow numbering in picture 1.8 for reference)
• 1.Move option to adjust the position on the grid plane.
• 2.Scale option to scale the object
• 3.Rotate option to rotate in x, y & z axis
• 4.Mirror option to mirror in any axis if required
• 5.Per Model Settings option to assign properties to entire model as a supportin marterial or
which part of the model is used as supporting material etc.,
• 6.Support Blocker option is used to eliminate supports on the object where supports
are not required.

4. Print Settings:
• Quality: Layer thickness need to be assign between 0.2mm to 0.3mm
• Shell: To assign wall thickness and no.of wall layers needed as shown in below picture
1.9.
– wall thickness = 1mm
• Infill or Density: To assign density and filling pattern inside the wall thickness as
shown in picture 1.9 in yellow hatched lines.
– Infill = 20% & Infill pattern = Lines
• Material: To assign nozzle and bed temperature. For PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) material:
– Nozzle or print temperature = 180 - 220 degree Celsius
– Bed temperature = 50-70 degree Celsius
• Speed: To assign nozzle speed. Slower the speed higher the surface finish and vice versa
– Nozzle speed = 50 mm/s.
• Support: To assign supporting material for overhanging or supportless surfaces in the
model.
• Build Plate Adhesion: To assign a built plate layer between the bed and the main part model.
This layer is used to give steady support to printing model and also to remove
easily from the printing bed.
– Skirt
– Raft
– Brim

5. Click Slice in prepare panel after assigning all printer settings. It will show amount of
material consumption, printing time, weight of print model.

6. Finally go to preview window and verify all the surface whether printing perfectly or not by
seeing each layer.

7. Finally Gcode file saved from CURA software is save in a memory storage chip and
inserted in to 3D printing FDM machine for printing.
Cura Parameters:

S.NO CURA PARAMETER NAME VALUE

1 Nozzle dia 0.4mm
2 Material and quantity LPA 6.5g
3 Printing duration 1hr 10min
4 Bed temperature 60
5 Nozzle temp 220
