Subject:- Composite Materials

Unit No. 01-Introduction to Composites

1. List out the functions of matrix phase of composite materials.
2. Explain the need of composite materials.
3. Explain the role/functions served by matrix and reinforcement in
composite materials
4. Classify the different types of fibers and list the limitations of natural
fiber.
5. Explain the properties of carbon fiber composites and list the
advantages.
6. What is hybrid composite explain it and list out the advantages of hybrid
composite materials?
7. Define the characteristics of composite materials. Also give the classification
of composites based on matrix and reinforcement?
8. Mention the advantages of structural composites.
Design Flexibility – Thermoset Composites give designers nearly
unlimited flexibility in designing shapes and forms. They be molded into
the most intricate components and can be made a wide range of densities
and chemical formulations to have precise performance properties.

Low cost per cubic inch – When comparing costs based on volume,
thermoset composites have lower material costs than traditional
materials such as wood, engineered thermoplastics and metals. In
addition, because thermoset composites have a low petroleum-based
content, they are not subjected to the price fluctuations experienced in
petroleum-based products.

Lower material costs – Because thermoset composites can be precisely

molded, there is little waste and therefore significantly lower overall
material costs than metals products.

Improved productivity – Industrial Designers and Engineers are able to

reduce assembly costs by combining several previously assembles parts
into a single component. Also, inserts can be molded directly into the
part during the molding process thereby eliminating the need for a post-
process. In addition, composites do not usually require additional
machining, thereby reducing work-in-process and time to market.
Unit No. 02-Polymer Matrix Composite.
1. Give five examples of natural resin.

2. Explain the types of synthetic resin

3. Differentiate between thermoplastic and thermoset resin.
4. Briefly explain the composite manufactured using hand layup method
with neat diagram.
5. Explain compression moulding technique with neat diagram.
6. What is RTM process? Explain the process involved in RTM process.
7. Explain Pultrusion process with neat sketch.
8. What is filament Winding? Define its advantages, disadvantages and
limitations.
