WEEK 1:Industry-Materials

MG. MARIOARAUJO GAMERO

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE

FIFTH SEMESTER 2021-2B

Nice to meet you!

I am happy to welcome you. I want to offer

you the best experience possible so I would
like to know about your favorite topics.
Industry
Industry is a sector whose activity is to transform raw
materials into products for final or intermediate
consumption. The vast majority of industrial
activities fall within the secondary sector
The very concept of industry always implies a productive
process, which will use a certain amount of labor and capital,
and which will be based on the transformation of raw
materials.
In addition, industrial companies will require another class of supplies
(such as energy resources) that, although they do not participate
directly in the industrial process, are essential for its existence. The
final result will be the obtaining of a manufactured good, which may
be for final consumption (if it will go directly to consumers) or
intermediate (in which case it must undergo another industrial
transformation process before it can be consumed by the public).
In this way, the concept of manufacturing activity is closely
linked to that of industry. However, it is convenient to point out
that, although the industry is usually associated with the
secondary sector, this identification is not entirely accurate
since there are some industries such as forestry that belong to
the primary sector.
Industry types
According to the weight of the raw materials they produce, we can
distinguish two main types of industries:

Heavy industry: Based on the production of machines and energy. We

can highlight the metallurgy, oil, chemical and extractive industries.
Semi- light industry: They use semi-finished products to generally
produce capital goods such as cars or machinery.
Light industry: It uses partially processed materials and is dedicated to
manufacturing processed or semi-finished products that will be
consumed mainly by the final user. We refer, for example, to the textill
item.

In addition, a sectoral classification can be made

the main ones being:

Steel industry (dedicated to the production of iron and

steel).
Automotive (land vehicles).
Food.
Chemistry.
Textile.
Materials

The materials are (substances natural or artificial ) that are used to build other
things. Each industry uses specific materials. For example, for the
construction industry metals, cements and ceramics , among others, are used
as materials , while in the textile industry cotton, wool and synthetic products
are used .

Each material is distinguished from the others by its properties . Depending on

the context in which you study a material or other materials with which you
want to compare it, the properties that will be most relevant are different.

For example, if we want to know why oil forms a layer on the surface of water,
we will be interested in two properties: solubility and density . Other properties
such as toughness, color, odor or conduction of electricity will be less
important.
Examples of materials
Oak wood .

Glass .

Fiberglass .

Aluminum .

Cement .

Gold .

Cotton fiber .

Lycra or elastane .

PET (polyethylene terephthalate)

Porcelain .
