Day 1

Title: Introduction to Maps and Globes

Whole group

Standards: SS.K.G.1.2- Explain that maps and globes help to locate different places and that

globes are a model of the Earth.

LAFS.K.RL.1.1- With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a

text.

LAFS.K.SL.2.6- Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

LAFS.K.SL.1.2- Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or

through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting

clarification if something is not understood.

Objective: Students will be able to explain what a map is why they are important and are used to

help locate different places.

Materials:

 Large globe

 Maps for students


o

 Large map to show

 Me on the Map

 Access to the internet

 Projector/smart board

 Blank paper to record responses

 Laptops/iPads with FlipGrid

Procedures

 Before the unit begins, start with pre-assessment Quizlet https://quizlet.com/_bfosgc?

x=1jqt&i=ncouk

 Start off by having a map of the world on the board and asking students what they think it

is. Inform students that it is a map. “This week we are going to talk about maps and why

they are important.”

 Read the book Me on the Map


 After reading the book, ask students why they think maps are important.

 After writing down answers, inform students that maps help people know where they are

going

 Show this video to students about maps

 Ask students to recall important information about the video

o What is a scale? What is a legend?

 Inform students that maps can be show big parts, like a map of the world, or it can show

small parts, like a map of their room

 Have a class discussion about the importance of maps that show big spaces and maps that

show small spaces.

Evaluation

 Give students the choice to discuss why they think maps are important

o They can film a FlipGrid video or write one sentence as to why maps are

important
