Product Term
It is a single variable or the logical product of several variables. The variables may or may not be
complemented.
Sum Term
It is a single variable or the sum of several variables. The variables may or may not be
complemented.
example
x.y.z is a product of sum
X+y is a sum of product
Sum of products expressions
A sum-of- products expression is a product term or several product terms logically added.
Example
x.y+z

Product of sums expressions
A sum-of- products expression is a sum term or several sum terms logically multiplied.
Example
(x+y).(x+z)
(x+y).z
Derivation of product-of-sums expressions
1. Construct a table of the input and output values.
2. Construct an additional column of sum terms containing the complemented and
uncomplemented variables for each row of the table. In each row the table, a sum term is
formed. However , in this case , if the input value for a given variable is 1, the variable will be
complemented and if 0, it will not be complemented.
3. The desired expression is the product of sums terms from the rows in which the output is 0.
