Mathematics Pre-Algebra Revision Grade 11
GRADE 11
REVISION OF ALGEBRA CONCEPTS FROM GRADE 10
Dear Learner:
1. Please read explanations on the listed concepts
2. Follow the worked examples and
3. Answer the activities on your own
Numbers
Before you can start anything in Mathematics - you need to know how numbers work.
So, here are the basics… (There is a summary on the next page - if you prefer flow
diagrams)
Numbers are broken down into Real and Non-Real numbers:
• Non-Real (ℝ’) numbers are numbers that don’t exist. (Imaginary or Complex
numbers)
Rational numbers (ℚ) on the other hand are either recurring (that means they have
a pattern) for example 0,333333… or they are terminating (that means that they end).
𝒂
For example, 2,25 or 3. Rational numbers can be written as a fraction , 𝒃 ≠ 𝟎.
𝒃
* Remember to learn both the names and the symbols - because a question can use
either the symbols or the names.
(ℝ)
(ℝ’)
(ℚ) (ℚ’)
(ℤ)
(ℕ𝟎 ) (ℕ)

Power
You need to learn these exponent laws as they will help you later on with other work
that you will cover all the way to matric. Learn them now and you won’t be confused
later.
There are two things that you need to be able to do with exponents:
▪ Simplify
▪ And solve
4
To simplify: use your exponents to get to the simplest possible form of an answer
(make sure that all of your exponents are positive).
ACTIVITY 1
For learners to do on their own
ACTIVITY 2
Learners to write the revision test at home.
Teacher should provide solutions when test is complete.
