The basic things of academic writing

Academic writing is a kind of challenging activity in terms of writing style. (Dolores et

al., 2003) stated that academic writing in a foreign language has been acknowledged as a
challenge in higher education. In academic writing, a writer should provide the content of
writing in the academic term. According to (Peters, 2008) academic writing as a theme, topic
or field most often appears in manuals, guides, or programs that purport to teach its various
forms or genres through the stipulation of general rules or tips focusing on essay writing.
Therefore, before starting the academic writing activities, it is good for the writer to
recognize the basic things of academic writing itself first. There are several things that we
could be recognized, such as the definition and the rules of academic writing, the problem
while in academic writing, and the use of digital writing.

Academic writing is defined as a writing activity that used the formal term lexical and
purport to give information for the reader about academic issues. Richard and Miller (2008)
stated that Academic writing is generally held to be writing that conforms to specific
expectations of language, structure, and purpose. The tone of academic writing is different
from the other style of writing such as creative writing or personal writing which is a kind of
writing style that allowed use the of informal language. In academic writing, a writer should
be aware with kind of the rules of academic writing such as structured, lexical, and
credibility. So, the writer should be able the use phrase and could be responsible for the
academic writing that has been made.

Furthermore, the problem in academic writing. A writer would be faced with several
difficulties in writing such as organizing the idea, grammatical, and cohered each of the
paragraphs. Oshima and Hogue (2007) say that academic writing in English is probably
different from academic writing in your native language. The words and grammar and also
the way of organizing ideas are probably different from what you are used to. From that way,
a writer needs a lot of practice to improve their writing skill in academic writing.

Moreover, there is the use of digital writing. Digital writing is an activity that used
technology as the media while the writer is in the writing activities. And, Blog is one of the
media that could be used for a writer during academic writing activities. According to
Pinkman (2005) blogs can provide interesting, authentic, and communicative resources that
can serve a variety of purposes in the language classroom. Through blogs, writers have the
access to write their idea and read other people writing. So, it would be motivated writers to
reflect on their writing. As a result, using digital writing could be effective in improving
writing performance.

There is no doubt that when writers write academic writing, they should recognize the basic
things of academic writing itself first.  It proved that there are several things that writers
could be recognized, such as the definition and the rules of academic writing, the problem
while in academic writing, and the use of digital writing. However, now writers do not need
to worry because by recognizing the basic thing of academic writing, it would be a reference
for a writer to be better awhile in an academic writing activity. Therefore, writers could make
their academic writing become improved.
