Introduction
In this tutorial you will be able to follow step by step how to Add the buffer wizard to a toolbar, Buffer,
Union, Intersect, and Symbolize in ArcMaps 10.8.

Add the Buffer Wizard to a Toolbar


1. Click on “Customize” at the top of the
window.
2. Select “Custom Mode…”. A new pop-up
window will appear (Figure 1)
3. Click on the middle tab “Commands”.
a. Find and click on “Tools” under
“Categories:”
OR
b. Type in “buffer wizard” in the search
bar saying “Show Commands
Containing:”
4. Click and drag the “Buffer Wizard” symbol
from the “Commands:” side to your tool bar
on the top of your screen.
5. Click “Close”.

Using Buffer
Geoprocessing Method
1. Click on “Geoprocessing” at the top of the
Window.
2. Select “Buffer…”. A new pop-up window will
appear (Figure 2).
3. Click on the folder beside “Input Features” or
click on the drop box and select the feature
you want to buffer (point, line or polygon).
4. Click on the folder beside “Output Features”
and find where you want to save the new
feature, rename it, and click “Save”
5. Type in the number what buffered under the
“Distance” heading. You can change the units
by clicking on the drop down box beside it.

6. Select the attributes you want dissolved together in the “Dissolve Fields” box (only certain ones
or all).
7. Click “OK”

Buffer Wizard Method
1. Click on the buffer wizard icon you added to your
toolbar (Figure 3). A pop-up window will appear
2. In the drop down box choose the feature you want to
buffer.

If you only want to buffer certain attributes from the feature,


select them before you open the buffer wizard.

3. Click on the check box next to “Use only selected


features” if you only want to use the selected feature
from the layer to buffer.
4. Click “Next” Figure 3
5. Chose if you want to create a buffer with a
measurement, based on an attribute, or as multiple buffer rings by clicking on the check box
beside each option.
6. Fill in the distance you want buffered or select the attribute you want to base the distance off
of.
7. Change the units at the bottom to represent your numbers
8. Click “Next”
9. Chose if you want to dissolve your buffer or not by checking the correct box.
10. Locate where you want to save your new feature and rename it.
11. Click “Finish”.

Using Union
1. Click on “Geoprocessing” at the
top of the Window.
2. Select “Union…”. A new pop-up
window will appear (Figure 4).
3. Click on the folder beside “Input
Features” or click on the drop box
and select all the features you
want to union (polygon only).
4. Click on the folder beside “Output
Features” and find where you
want to save the new feature,
rename it, and click “Save” Figure 4
5. Click “OK”

Using Intersect
1. Click on “Geoprocessing” at the
top of the Window.
2. Select “Intersect…”. A new pop-up
window will appear (Figure 5).
3. Click on the folder beside “Input
Features” or click on the drop box
and select all the features you
want to intersect (point, line or
polygon).
4. Click on the folder beside “Output

Features” and find where you
want to save the new feature,
rename it, and click “Save”
5. Click “OK”

Symbolizing
1. Right-Click on the feature you want to
symbolize from your table of contents.
2. Select “properties”
3. Click on the “Symbology tab at the top of
the pop-up window (Figure 6).
4. Click on “Categories” on the left, under
“Show:”
5. Select “Unique values” under "Categories”
6. Find the attribute you want to symbolize in
the drop box under “Value Field”.
7. Click “Add All Values”
a. Double click on the color box to
change the color for an attribute.
OR
b. Select a color ramp you like for the Figure 6

drop box under “Color Ramp”.


8. Click “OK”
