2022-2023 ZEBRA MARCHING BAND HANDBOOK
Introduction
Welcome! We are happy to have you as a member of the Wayne Memorial HS Zebra
Marching Band (ZMB). The marching band program here has many strong traditions
and fond memories from past years, performances, and trips. The staff hopes that you
will also accumulate many fond memories of your years in the band. Many of our
Wayne Memorial Alumni look back on their times in the program as some of the best
times of their high school careers.
The Wayne Memorial Zebra Marching Band is well known in our community and state
for fine performances and student behavior. It is our goal to commit ourselves in
maintaining this respected image of our band, school, and community.
Creative Problem Solvers who think critically and can make decisions, through
artistic modes, in situations where there are no standard answers.
Collaborative Workers who are confident, receptive to others ideas, and utilize
peer input to develop interpersonal relationships within the framework of
their setting.

Ensemble Responsibilities
The Marching Band is a musical marching unit that meets after school in the summer &
fall. The prerequisite for the Marching Band class is concurrent concert band study
during hours one through six. A student needs to only enroll in 1 instrumental music
class (band/orchestra) to be eligible for marching band. The ensemble consists of
woodwinds, brass, percussion, and a color guard. Membership requires total
dedication and maximum effort in all aspects of marching, playing, rehearsal, and
performance. Failure to meet these requirements can result in a dismissal from the
ensemble.
The Marching band provides entertainment at home football games, local parades and
events. The ZMB also competes in the Scholastic Marching Circuit. These competitions
are held on Saturdays starting in late September through late October. Attendance at
all competitions is mandatory. The ZMB starts rehearsals in early August through
late October after school and evening rehearsals. The color guard and percussion
sections may be expected to rehearse separately from the winds. These rehearsals
typically start in June leading up to full ZMB rehearsals in August-October. Participation
in the Marching Band will result in mandatory attendance at all rehearsals and
performances, including the parades, band camps and competitions during the spring,
summer and fall.

Band Member Responsibilities
Attendance Policy
The unique nature of the ZMB has, as part of the curriculum, performances outside of
the scheduled school day. The success of our organization and ensembles depends
directly upon the full and complete participation of all of its members. Google Calendar
is provided before the start of each marching band season and is updated and
available on BANDapp & via the Google Calendar app. It is reasonably expected that
with this notice, as a member of the Wayne Memorial Zebra Marching Band, you will
attend every rehearsal and performance. Please do not schedule avoidable conflicts
with rehearsals or performances. These include job commitments, family vacations,
baby-sitting, doctor and dentist appointments, senior pictures, etc. Attendance will be
taken at every rehearsal and performance and there is nothing that can truly replace
the absence of a performance. There is no “second string” in marching band. Every
member relies on you for their performance. Lack of attendance in rehearsal/football
games/competitions/parades may affect letter/chevron/PE credit/eligibility to perform. If
there is an emergency, please contact Mr. Wolf ASAP. Communication solves
everything.
School-Related Conflicts:
School-Related Athletics:
5
2022-2023 ZEBRA MARCHING BAND HANDBOOK
Because our calendar is available by the end of the previous school year, it is expected
that students check their schedule against the band schedule. Any conflicts should be
addressed at the beginning of a sport’s/activity’s season. All conflicts must be worked
out no fewer than at least two weeks before the requested rehearsal or four weeks
before the requested performance. This will allow coaches and directors to make the
necessary adjustments to their ensemble or team.
Emergencies/Illness:
Excused Absences:
● Extreme illness
● Death in immediate family
● Family wedding
● Injury (you are expected to attend rehearsals even with an injury – you can
still learn by watching, supporting the group, playing on the sideline.)
● Communicate IN ADVANCE – BAND app, call, e-mail, MR. WOLF
● Bring a doctor’s note and/or note from a parent the next day explaining the
reason for your absence.
● You must have a note or communicate in advance or the absence will be
considered unexcused. Unexcused absence = no performance.
Unexcused Absences:
● Work/babysitting
● Homework (it’s priority #1, so you need to figure out time management)
● Forgot/couldn’t get a ride (always post on BANDapp if you need to carpool)
● Sniffles, tired, cranky, broke up with boyfriend/girlfriend, shoes on the wrong feet,
I had other plans, ‘but Cedar Point!’, ‘but Red Wings preseason!’…..you get the
point…..
● ISS/Suspension – these reflect negatively on you, but also your band!
● TIME MISSED FROM REHEARSAL MAY AFFECT LETTER, CHEVRON, PE
CREDIT WAIVER, AND ABILITY TO PERFORM.

Absence from Performance:
Our band uniforms are very expensive and must be treated accordingly. This applies to
all parts of the uniform, including accessories. Always hang up your uniform, whether at
home or at school. Your uniform will be clean when you receive it. It is your
responsibility to keep your uniform ready for inspection at any time. If you get your
uniform dirty, it is your duty to have it cleaned. You will be held responsible for any
damage that is done to the uniform you check out. Don’t make switches! Wear the band
uniform with pride, and wear it completely. This means never wear the uniform for a
performance with the coat unbuttoned, or parts missing. When you wear your uniform,
remember that you are representing our school, our band, and our community. Please
act accordingly.
● There is no cost to use the uniform. If you wish to have the uniform cleaned, you
may pay to do so at an approved dry cleaner. Uniforms are NOT to be
hand/machine washed.
● The entire uniform costs about $500 and 2-3 MONTHS to replace
● Students will be held responsible for missing/damaged parts of the uniform.
● The only way that uniforms can be taken home (for senior pictures) is by parent
or guardian leaving a refundable deposit check for $500. When the uniform is
returned, the check will be given back to the parent/guardian. If the uniform is not
returned, then the check will be cashed.
● Students receive 2 pairs of gloves (winds) or wristbands (percussion) for the
season. Additional gloves/wristbands may be purchased when needed for
$5.00/pr
● Color guard will receive 1 pair of gloves. Additional gloves are $16.

Summer Uniform:
Code of Conduct
Each band member is a representative of our school and our community. Our code of
conduct applies to all band activities, in or out of uniform, at school, in our community
and out of town. We and your parents expect you to act in an appropriate manner,
including appearance, behavior, and language. Band members should be considerate
of other organizations, students, staff, and chaperones. Please show respect for other
people’s property. Individual problems will be dealt with in accordance with the severity
of the situation. This includes being sent home, at your expense, if we are out of town.
Of course, alcoholic beverages, smoking, vaping, and illegal drugs are absolutely
prohibited. All school district rules/policies are in effect and enforced at any band
function and use common sense.
Practice Requirements
We do not require practice sheets for high school concert bands or marching band.
However, it is imperative that you maintain a consistent level of practice. This is
important from the standpoint of being prepared for performances and rehearsals.
Everyone has an important role and part within the ensemble, so PRACTICE,
PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! Section leaders will schedule “sectionals” (instrument family
practice sessions). These are MANDATORY.
Instrument Care
It is your responsibility to take care of your instrument, and keep it in good working
order. This applies to school owned, as well as individually owned instruments. If you
need repairs, it is up to you to see the director as soon as possible. If the director
cannot fix the problem, it will be the responsibility of the students, and or parents, to
take the instrument to the repair shop. Please take care of all repairs well in advance of
any performances we might have. It is recommended that you take your instrumental
music needs to either of the following places:

2022-2023 ZEBRA MARCHING BAND HANDBOOK
These music stores visit WMHS every week. It is possible for them to pick up an
instrument (school or student owned) during their visit to WMHS. They will then drop off
a bill for payment.

After School Rehearsals
After school rehearsals will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 PM - 9 PM.
We end promptly at 9 PM so that students can put away their equipment and be ready
for pick-up. This process takes about 30 minutes, so you may expect your students to
be ready to leave around 9:30 (though this is determined by how
quickly/efficiently/correctly they put their equipment away).

What Not to Have During Rehearsal
● NO Cell phones
○ They’re a HUGE distraction. This distraction holds the entire group back from improving.
○ If you are observed using it in rehearsal, you will be instructed to put the cell phone
away in a backpack. Failure to do so will be considered ‘Failure to Comply’ and you will
be pulled from rehearsal and administration referral will take place.
○ Mr. Wolf and ZMB Staff will have our phones available for emergencies.
● Your cares, worries, concerns, etc. that take focus away from rehearsal.
○ We all know this is easier said than done, but we have to help each other with this.
○ We are a family – we will help you through difficult times outside of rehearsal.
● Negative/selfish attitude, excuses, finger-pointing, etc.
Other Information
Students will sometimes need to plan for food before events. Stay tuned to the BAND

Communication/Social Media
The Zebra Marching Band utilizes BANDapp as the primary source of
communication. This is a free iOS/Android app that is a requirement. This app is how
we communicate as a program on a daily basis. Member posts must be approved to
avoid “spam” posting. This is to ensure that when you get a BANDapp notification, you
know that it is important information that parents/students/staff MUST know.
● Download the BAND app from the iOS App Store/Android Store
● Sign Up (free) using an email address - please create a name that identifies you as the
parent/guardian of your student. This is especially important if a parent has a different last
name than a student. (ie. Sally Smith - Tony Smith’s Parent)
● Search for ZMB 22-23. Join the group! All member requests are approved by the group admin.
● You will be able to message the group, an instructor, or an individual through the app. You will
also be able to post questions, pictures, videos to the group.
● There are also additional BANDs to join for some sections (ZMB Percussion, ZMB Color
Guard, etc.). Please join those groups so your instructors for those groups can communicate
directly with those sections quickly and easily.

Bussing
Transportation
● We are expecting bussing to events (always subject to district changes). If this is
the case, we will still need a lot of parents to travel with us to help with
equipment/props and to represent us in the stands!
By June 1, we have to send ensemble numbers to the drill writer to ensure that we
have drill ready to go for August. Creating this show is an art, and art takes time. This
means we have to give the drill writer numbers with sufficient enough time to create
meaningful and artistic drill. Turning in the commitment and registration forms is a
commitment to paying the full ZMB membership fees.
If paying fees is an issue, do not worry. We have several fundraisers that can
cover all fees with proper participation. Fundraising helps reduce marching band
fees and ensures that we keep operating the Zebra Marching Band program at
the level we need to.
Total Payment for 2022 season is $125 due by August 30, 2022
