Introduction
In this tutorial you will learn how to, Convert ASCII Text Files to Feature Class, Turning on Spatial Analyst
and 3D Analyst Extensions, Create a Contour Surface, and Create a Cross Profile.

Converting ASCII Text Files to Feature Class


1. Open your Catalog and drag & drop your .txt file
OR
Click “Add Data”( ) at the top of your screen and load
your .txt file
2. Right-click on it in your table of contents
3. Select “Open Attribute Table…”
4. Review the field names and which contain the coordinates
and elevation
5. Right-click on the text file in your table of contents
6. Select “Display X Y Data…”
A popup window will appear as seen in Figure 1.
7. In the X field put your Easting/Longitude field name from
the attribute table
8. In the Y field put your Northing/Latitude field name from
the attribute table
9. In the Z field put your Elevation field name from the
attribute table (if applicable)
10. Click “OK”

Turning on Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst
Extensions
1. Click “Customize” ( )from the top of the page
2. Click “Extensions…”
A popup window will appear as seen in Figure 2.
3. Click on the check box in front of Spatial Analyst and 3D
Analyst
4. Click “Close”
5. Click “Customize” again on the top of the page
6. Select “Toolbars”
7. Scroll through and click on Spatial Analyst
A check mark will appear to the left of it and it will be highlights
8. Click “Customize” again on the top of the page
9. Select “Toolbars”
10. Scroll through and click on 3D Analyst Figure 2
11. Tool bars will show floating on your screen (Figure 3)
12. Drag and Drop it on the top of your page to where
the other toolbars are to keep them there.

Creating a Contour Surface
To create a contour on your map you need to have a raster data set. If you already have a raster skip
ahead to creating contour lines.

Point to Raster
1. Open the Search window (click Ctrl F at
the same time)
2. Type “Topo to Raster in the search bar
3. Click on “Topo to Raster (Spatial
Analysis)”
A popup window will appear as seen in Figure 4
4. Load in your point data you want to
convert to a raster in the “Input Feature
Class” Figure 4
5. Change the type to be “Contour” in the
white space under the input for all of the features and change the Field name to represent the
elevation
6. Chose where you want the output/raster to be save to (preferably a Geodatabase)
7. Change the “Output cell size” to what ever number you want or leave it with the default (small
the number the smaller the grid size which will result in better detail).
8. Click “OK”

Creating Contour lines


1. Open the Search window (click Ctrl F
at the same time)
2. Type “Contour” in the search bar
3. Click on “Contour (Spatial Analysis)”
A new popup window will appear as seen in
Figure 5
4. Select your Raster (elevation) under
the “Input raster”.
5. Chose where you will be saving the
contour line to. Figure 5
6. Chose your Contour interval (the
number you want the elevation/contour lines to go up/down by).
7. Chose the contour type you want to use.
8. Click “OK” when you are done.

Creating a Cross Profile
1. Click on the Interpolate Line button
( ) on the 3D Analyst toolbar (Figure 6)
2. Click and draw a line of the area you

want to graph/represent on the map.
3. Double click to end the line
4. Click on the down arrow right beside the “Profile Graph”
button on the 3D Analyst toolbar
5. Click “Profile Graph”

A line graph will be created represent the line you created on the map

Editing Graph
1. Right-click on the map window
2. Click “Properties”

A popup window will appear like Figure 8 and 9

3. Select Series and you can edit the fields in the X/Y field of the
Graph
4. Click the Appearance tab (Figure 9)
5. Click on Title to change the title
6. Click on Left, Right, Bottom, Top Tabs to Label your axis

Add to Layout
1. Right-click the map window
2. Click add to Layout
3. Switch to Layout view and you can change the size of the
map
