Atomic structure and Bonding Worksheet

Instruction: Answer all the following questions below (Photos of drawn diagrams should be
taken and place in the document as needed):
Total marks: /45marks

1. What does the term ‘electronic configuration’ mean?

Ans: Electronic Configuration is the distribution of electrons in an atom to different electronic
shells. There are four (4) shells at this level and each of them has a limit. The first shell has a
limit of two electrons. The second and third shells have a limit of 8 electrons. The fourth shell
can hold the remaining electrons, but, the recommended capacity (based on stability) is 8
electrons. the reason why electronic shells have a limit is because they are stable at a certain
number of electrons.
[2marks]

2. Use shell diagrams to illustrate the arrangement of electrons in the atom of the following
elements and state the number of valence electrons in each of the atom:
a) Ca2+
b) Ne

c) H+

d) F-
[16marks]

3. In terms of the transfer of electrons, explain the term “Ionic bonding”?

Ans: Ionic bonding is the transferring of Valence electrons from a metal atom to a non-metal
atom until both atoms have a full octet and both atoms are stable.
[3marks]

4. Use dot and cross diagrams to illustrate the ionic bonding between the following pair of
elements and give the name of the compound formed:
a) Aluminum and oxygen
b) Potassium and nitrogen

c) Magnesium and chlorine

d) Sodium and Fluorine

[16marks]
5. Write the formula for each of the following ions:
a) Dichromate

Ans: Cr2O2-7

b) Carbonate

Ans: CO2-3

c) Iron (III) ion

Ans: Fe3+

d) Aluminum ion
Ans: Al3+

[4marks]

5. Write the formula for the following compounds below (Must show the steps taken to
arrive at answers):
a) Copper (II) chloride

Ans: Cu1Cl2 or CuCl2

b) Barium nitride

Ans: Ba3N2

c) Lead (II) phosphate

Ans: Pb3(PO4)2

d) Aluminum hydroxide

Ans: Al1OH3 or AlOH3
