Technology Integration PD Introduction: Providing learning experiences for teachers should

ensure that the teachers are treated as professionals with the ability and freedom to

choose what professional development opportunities are best for them. Teachers must

have a voice because they know better than anyone what areas they need to grow in.

This plan is put together to focus on the individual teacher and growing each individual

teacher within the district. This is designed to meet the needs of the teachers while also

holding strong to district’s mission, vision, and instructional model. The day is broken

into 4 parts: an introduction/engagement, opportunity for reflection, learning, and

collaboration.

Welcome, Technology Integration Reminders: Faculty members will be welcomed to the

district wide professional development day and encouraged to say “Hello” to someone

sitting near them. To start this session, the following “Did you Know” video will be

shown to engage faculty members in thinking about how technology is changing our

learning environment each day. This 45 minute session will serve as an important

reminder of the district-wide instructional model, in addition to the mission statement.

Faculty members will be introduced to, or re-introduced to, the four

technology/instructional coaches. In quoting Alaniz & Wilson (2015) again, they state,

“collegial coaching exemplifies an effective model for sustaining applicable and

transformative professional development for teachers” (p. 20). We hope that this

professional development day is fruitful in the information it provides to teachers, but

recognize the importance of a structure for future professional development. The

coaches are here to serve that purpose and thus it is important the teachers are

informed of their opportunities.

SMART Goal Setting Opportunity: This opportunity is available for all faculty members to focus

on setting a technology integration related SMART goal. Reflective practice is an

important component to being a teacher. Teachers should use this opportunity to

establish their comfort levels with technology integration while recognizing potential for

growth. SMART goals should be developed and checkpoints throughout the school year

should be established to promote the reflective practice necessary for professional

development and growth.

Technology Integration Breakout Sessions: The following professional develop plan is

organized to allow for teachers to be the experts and share their wealth of knowledge

with their peers. Alaniz & Wilson (2015) state, teachers’ “own professional development

experiences are largely one-size-fits-all and rarely customized to their individual

instructional needs” (p. 8). The breakout meeting structure encourages teachers to find

three things they are passionate about or interested in learning more about. The

teachers, not the administration or school district, are in control of their professional

development. Just as student voice is important, so is the voice and choice of teachers.

The breakout sessions are designed to promote discourse, conversation, and sharing of

experiences by all participants not just the speakers. We have worked hard to plan for

and gather the best that we could find to present information to our teachers. The goal

is that if each individual teacher grows or learns something new today, our district took

a major step forward in providing authentic, engaging learning opportunities for the

students that we serve.

PLC Small Group Discussion: Small group and grade level PLCs will meet for forty-five minutes

in the afternoon to discuss learning that took place throughout the morning. Small

groups will be tasked with discussing any new technology resources, tips, and tricks that

they learned throughout the day. The focus should be on what technology tools would

be most beneficial to use for that PLC small group. Specifically, members should

consider and discuss those technology resources that will promote beneficial,

meaningful collaboration in addition to the creation of authentic, engaging learning

environments.

Planning, Integration Time: Time to close the day will be provided to enable educators the

opportunity to experiment with and plan for new technology integration in their

individual classrooms. Truthfully, we recognize that there is never enough time

extended to teachers to plan for integration. “Little or no support in transferring

professional development ideas to the classroom” (Diaz-Maggioli). Without time for

intentional and specific planning, technology integration and instructional practices will

rarely evolve.
