FORMER members of the
security forces were “used” to
secure the devolution of policing
and justice then abandoned, a
former policewoman has said.
Retired members of the RUC
part-time reserve were promised
a £20 million gratuity payment as
part of the deal to devolve justice
but it has now emerged that half
the money may be held back.
On Friday the new Stormont
justice department confirmed
that it expects the payments to
be taxed.
Former reservist Olive Bushe,
74, said that the move to tax
the payments was an “insult” to
those who fought terrorism.
She said that now justice
had been devolved ex-security
force personnel have little
leverage: “After that we are of no
consequence to the government
any more. We were told in 2009
that the £20m was to be a gratuity
and at no time was it given out
that this was to be taxed.”
