Q.1 a. Explain the crystal structure of CsCl and also derive the formula to calculate packing 4 (CO1)
fraction.
b. i) Explain Schottky and Frenkel defects with diagrams. 4 (CO1)

ii)Draw planes for following Miller indices (102), (10 2) and directions [102], [102]
c. Derive the relation between lattice constant and atomic radius for Face centered cubic 4 (CO1)
and Diamond cubic structure.

Q.2 a. Derive Bragg’s Law and draw diagram of Braggs’s Spectrometer. 4 (CO2)
b. X-rays of wavelength give second order Bragg’s reflection at glancing angle 500 with 4 (CO2)
(311) plane of Nickel. Find the wavelength of x-ray if the lattice constant for Ag is 4.09
Å. Also, calculate the angle through which crystal has to be rotated to get the first order
reflection.
c. i) Define critical radius ratio. 1 (CO1)
ii)Explain the nature of bonds that exist in metals. Discuss the important properties of 3 (CO2)
metals.

Q.3 a. Describe with diagram band formation in silicon as per band theory of solids. 4 (CO3)

b. Define Fermi energy in semiconductor. Show that carrier density in intrinsic 4 (CO3)
semiconductor is a function of energy band gap.
c. The effective mass of hole in a particular intrinsic semiconductor is three times that of 4 (CO3)
electrons. The band gap is 0.9eV. Calculate the temperature at which the Fermi level
would be shifted towards the conduction band by 10% from the middle of the forbidden
energy gap.
Q.4 a. What is ionic polarization? Derive relation for ionic polarizability. 4 (CO4)
b. Write any four salient features for each of ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials. 4 (CO4)
c. A parallel plate capacitor of plate separation 1.23mm is subjected to potential difference 4 (CO4)
of 120V with dielectric medium in between with relative permittivity 9.2. Calculate E,D,
and P vectors.(ε 0= 8.85×10-12 F/m)

Q.5 a. Explain magnetization in case of diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic material 4 (CO5)
with neat labelled diagrams and/or graphs.
b. i) What is the origin of magnetic moment in atoms? Give relation between orbital 2 (CO5)
magnetic moment and Bohr magneton.
ii) The magnetic flux density within a bar of some material is 0.525 T at an H field value 2 (CO5)
of 3.44x105 A/m Compute a. magnetic permeability, b. magnetic susceptibility. also
suggest the type of magnetization being displayed by this material. (μo=1.257x10-6 H/m)
c. i)What is retentivity? 1 (CO5)
ii)What is superconductor? Explain Type-II superconductors with a neat labelled 3 (CO5)
diagram.
