BEED 2-1
Inquiry approach - is an approach to learning that engages our natural curiosity and desire to
make sense of the world.
Scientific method - is an approach to seeking knowledge that involves forming and testing a
hypothesis.
Make an observation
Ask a question
Gather background information
Create a hypothesis
Create an experiment to test the hypothesis
Analyze the results of the experiment
Draw a conclusion
Share the conclusion
Decide what question (if any) should be asked next
Project method - is one of the modern method of teaching in which, the students point of view
is given importance in designing the curricula and content of studies. This method is based on
the philosophy of Pragmatism and the principle of ‘Learning by doing’.
All the methods of teaching science can be classified into two types: Teacher-centered and
Student-centered
TEACHER-CENTERED METHODS:
This type of teaching methods focuses on telling, memorizing, and recalling information. The
student’s participation is very limited wherein they only ask questions or answers questions.
STUDENT-CENTRED METHODS:
This process emphasizes on need, requirement, interest and capability of students. The students
are active participants where in their skills and abilities are developed.
1. LECTURE-DISCUSSION METHOD:
This method is a combination of lecture method and discussion method. This is very helpful in
building an active verbal interaction between the teachers and students. Students either passively
take notes or ask questions through the teacher’s presentation.
2. LABORATORY METHOD:
This method in commonly thought of as a hands on and minds on approach to teach science
where in students have the opportunity to gain some experience with phenomena associated
with their course of study.
3. OBSERVATION METHOD:
4. PROJECT METHOD
This method emphasizes on building a comprehensive unit around an activity which may be
carried out in school or outside. The essence of this method lies in the fact that a group of
students do a purposeful task.
In a problem solving method, children learn by working on problems. This enables the students
to learn new knowledge by facing the problems to be solved.
These techniques help engage students and help them understand the importance of science.
They also make it fun to teach scientific concepts and help students understand common topics
in the scientific world.
1. Peer-to-peer teaching, which involves students in their own education. This teaching
technique encourages rote memorization and note-taking instead of excitement about the world
of science.
2. Real-life scenarios, which involve case studies and ways of analyzing current problems.
These scenarios are ideal for classes of any size, but they work best when each student has
access to needed specialized equipment.
3. Current Events Tie-Ins, Some students do not enjoy science classes because they cannot
imagine how they will ever use the information presented. One good example of a current event
related to science is the BP oil spill.
4. Hands-On Activities with Follow-Up Work, Hands-on activities are a great way to
introduce students to the world of science. Whether a chemistry teacher has students mixing
chemicals in a lab or a physics teacher asks students to design and develop a physics
experiment, these are excellent opportunities for learning.
To provide a framework for how these teaching strategies might be most useful to instructors,
we organized them into five sections;
-Giving students several seconds to think after asking a question and up to two minutes for some
questions improves their learning. Below are four simple teaching strategies grounded in
research to structure classroom time for students to think and talk.
•Wait time
•Think-pair-share (TPS)
-If learning requires that students construct ideas for themselves, then demanding the active
participation of every single student in a class is essential to learning. To encourage, and in fact
demand, the participation of all students in a classroom, you can use the following two strategies
with little to no preparation or use of class time.
•Hand raising
-Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of every learner, whether it is those who
learn at a slower rate or those gifted students who benefit from enrichment activities. The
following two strategies may assist instructors in working toward an inclusive, fair, and equitable
classroom community for all of their students.
-Science is fundamentally about negotiating models and ideas about how the natural world
functions. By students who may not already have scientifically accurate understanding by using
the following three teaching strategies;
•norms
-To promote student engagement and strive for classroom equity. Below are two specific
strategies;
