2: Buck Converter Based Electric Vehicle with Separately Excited Motor

Aim
To understand the variation in speed and input of separately excited motor with
respect to duty cycle of Buck converter for Electric Vehicle Application.

Model Calculation and Formula

T On
1. The duty cycle of Buck Converter
δ=
T T
Where, on - On Time of the Chopper and T is the
total switching time of the chopper

2. Output voltage of buck converter is

V o=δV S where V S is the supply voltage

3. Back EMF of Separately Excited Motor

Eb =k e φωm =kωm ω
where m is the motor speed in
rps

4. Torque of the Separately Excited Motor is

T e=k e φI a =kI a where I a is the armature current
in Amps

(Diagram should be changed based on the model the particular student prepared)

Procedure
1. Construct the Buck Converter for 5 Hp, 1750 RPM separately DC Motor which has
300 V Field Supply and 240 V Armature supply in MATLAB Simulink environment
2. Choose the inductance and capacitance value as 5 mH and 150 µF based on the
ripples in the load current and voltage
3. Generate the switching sequence using the repeated sequence, relational operator
for 5 kHz
4. Connect the RPM to km/hr calculation block in the output of the speed
measurement terminal of Motor by verifying whether output is RPM or RPS with
conversion blocks
5. For various values of duty cycle between 0 and 1, note down the ON time, Output
voltage and current of buck converter, motor speed under no load and full load
conditions
6. Tabulate the readings for the duty cycle between 0 and 1
7. Analyse the performance of the buck converter fed separately excited DC Motor for
Regenerative Braking Applications by providing load torque is negative

Result and Conclusion

Thus the performance of Buck Converter Fed separately excited DC Motor is analysed. It
shows that as duty cycle increases, ON time of the chopper increases which helps to
increase the output voltage of buck converter and Motor Speed. When the duty cycle
reduces, the output voltage reduces so that the Motor speed reduces. This Buck Converter
circuit is not suitable for Regenerative Action Application in Electric Vehicle
Activity after the completion of Lab Experiment
Use the different sources in the internet understand how the regenerative action take place
in the particular model vehicle. You are asked to follow the following steps
1. Identify the company which has the supply of Electric Vehicle based on your own
interest
2. Understand the power rating including the power rating, vehicle type and other details
which are all necessary
3. Analyse the process of regenerative braking in the vehicle
4. Write your own report below
