In this activity, my students are going to use StoryJumper to create a collaborative story based on
The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt.
Pedagogy Planning
Activity 1. Students will begin the lesson by listening to the story
The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. The book
can either be read aloud by the teacher or can be
watched on YouTube at https://youtu.be/489micE6eHU.
2. After listening to the book, the class will discuss
audience and purpose through the crayon’s eyes.
3. Students will prewrite a letter from a crayon who was
not in the original book to Duncan, expressing a concern
or persuading him to do something. Students need to
identify Duncan as their audience, and what purpose
their letter is going to serve.
4. The teacher will introduce students to the StoryJumper
app by giving a quick demonstration on how to add their
pages, create an illustration, and record their voice. The
class can also work together to craft a letter from a
crayon to make sure everyone understands the
assignment. This demonstration will serve as an example
for students to refer to.
5. After deciding which color’s perspective they will be
writing from and what purpose their letter will serve,
students will use StoryJumper (StoryJumper.com) to
write their letter and add an illustration to accompany it.
Students will also focus on adding supporting details to
their letter to create added interest. Students will have
access to the class created example and are not allowed
to use the same color as the example.
6. Each student will add two pages to the book, their letter
and illustration, to compile a single class book, The Day
the Crayons Quit REMIX Edition.
7. The student can either draw a picture of images in their
crayon choice’s color or they can use the tools in the app
to create an image.
8. After adding their letter to the book, students will have a
classmate help to proofread their letter for clarity. The
student that is helping to proofread will try and identify
the author’s purpose in writing the letter.
9. Once the student’s submission has been reviewed, the
student will record themselves reading their letter on
their StoryJumper page using the voice tool.
10. When all students have added their contributions and
had it reviewed by a classmate, the teacher will play the
book for the class to enjoy.

Mobile App Option  Name: StoryJumper
 Price: Free
 App Store: Google Chrome Web Store
 The website also has a mobile friendly interface
that can be accessed via smart phone.
 For those that do not have access to the Google
Chrome Web Store or a computer, My Story
Book Maker is an app available for free in the
Apple Store that works similarly. Ideally, all
students would access the same app so that
they can all contribute to the same book. For
students that do not have access at home
consider letting them work on it in class.
