Conductor Size in MCM or kcmil

Background:

1 mil is a length of 1/1000th of an inch (0.001”) or 0.0254 mm

A circular mil (cmil) is the area of a circle with a diameter of d = 1 mil (0.001” or 0.0254 mm) as shown below and in metric
units, its area is:
π π( . )
A= = = 0.0005067075 𝑚𝑚2

Hence, 1 cmil = 0.0005067075 𝑚𝑚2

Now, 1 MCM is 1000 cmil where M is the Roman numeral for 1000 so for example a
conductor size of 477 MCM as per ACC ET50 in the metric system is
477x1000x0.0005067075 = 241.7 𝑚𝑚2

In the current National Electrical Code (NEC) used in the US and also in the Canadian
Electrical Code (CEC) used here, MCM is often replaced by kcmil where k represents
kilo or 1000 so 477 MCM = 477 kcmil

Classification: Protected A
