Advocacy Action Plan
How would I go about convincing three middle schools around my area to offer at least one
mental wellness program a month?
I am trying to solve the problem of the lack of mental wellness awareness in schools by
advocating that they add at least one mental health-based program a month to their
curriculum.
Actionable Goals: (You can have 1-3 Goals. Goals should be written as SMART Goals:
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-Focused, Time Bound). For example: By the
end of TEL 410, I will contact 3 state legislatures to discuss school safety.
1. By the end of TEL 410, I will contact three middle schools around my area about
adding mental wellness programs.
2. By the end of TEL 410, I will give 3 low-cost examples of what schools can do.
Actions: List specific actions you will take to achieve your goals here. You should have
several action items for each goal. Think through, and list, each step you will need to
take to achieve your goal.
Goal #1:
- Locate three public middle schools within the next two weeks.
- Find the contact information for the administrators at each school.
- Draft a professional email to the administrators and have it peer edited.
Goal #2:
- Research ways that other schools have provided this (such as colleges and high
schools).
- Find research articles on what types of programs work best for middle schoolers
specifically.
- Determine which types would work best for my area, as well as ones that don’t cost a
lot.

involved in your advocacy focus work):
**This section may list team members or contact information for the organization
you are working with.
I will be aligning myself with the Hamilton School District, as they have had success with
mental health-based programs in the past.
