Resume

The resume is the third component to develop in preparation for securing your first teaching
position. The resume depicts a brief, yet concise, summary of your education and experience. As a
result keep your resume between 1-2 pages. Make sure your resume is easy to read for potential
employers and has the ability to quickly glance and locate specific types of information regarding
your qualifications. Many different forms of resumes exist but most require similar types of
information. Be sure to include the following components: (a) personal data, (b) career objective,
(c) education, (d) teaching/professional experience, (e) certifications/specialized skills, (f) other
work experience, (g) honors/activities, (h) professional organizations, and (i) references.

a) Personal Data – most resumes begin with your personal data at the top of the first page as a
header. This would include your name, address, phone number, and email address. It’s
generally a good idea to use some type of horizontal line as a divider between your personal
data and the remaining components.
b) Career Objective – This should consist of a one sentence statement reflecting the type of
teaching position you are seeking as well as any specific extracurricular duties you may
wish to pursue.
c) Education – List your degrees, the institution granting the degree, years of attendance,
minors, and if you wish you may list your GPA. You could also choose to list your teaching
certifications in this section instead of a separate category.
d) Teaching/Professional Experience – List all relevant experiences in chronological order
starting with the most recent. If this is your first teaching experience, then be sure to list
your student teaching experience. Other possibilities include prior teaching practicums,
coaching experience, athletic training experience, and so forth. These experiences should
relate directly to the career objective stated previously on the resume.
e) Certifications/Specialized Skills – It provides information and details certifications held
and/or any specialized skills you possess. Your teaching certification is listed here, along
with subject(s) and grade levels for which you are qualified to teach, in addition to the state
granting teaching licensure. You may be a certified athletic trainer, lifeguard training, CPR,
WSI or some other specialized skill.
f) Other Work Experience – List any prior work experience not related to your professional
career objective. This may include both paid and volunteer work experience. You may also
choose to list Volunteer experience as a separate category if you have a couple experiences
you wish to spot light.
g) Honors/Activities – Document any honors received over the course of your collegiate
program (i.e., Dean’s List, Honor Roll, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society). In addition, any
extracurricular activities deemed appropriate can also be reported in this section. Perhaps
you are the member of an athletic team or intramural team at your college/university. Do
you belong to a fraternity or some other service organization? Maybe you attended a state or
national AAHPERD Convention. This type of information could fit under this heading or
perhaps you may wish to enter a new category titled Professional Development.
h) References – this serves as the final resume section. Some individuals will choose to use the
following blanket statement, “References available upon request.” Nonetheless, it is
suggested to list references rather than using the above statement. Listing specific references
provides employers with immediate contact information. Include as much contact
information as possible for each reference.
