What I Can Do

Activity 4 Genetic Engineering Techniques

Directions. Distinguish the techniques in genetic engineering as based on the
situation and examples given. Write the letter of the choices.

A. Artificial selection B. Selective breeding C. Hybridization D. Inbreeding

E. Cloning F. Gene splicing G. Gel electrophoresis: analyzing DNA

B 1. When animals with desired characteristics are mated to produce offspring

with those desired traits. Dachshund were once bred to hunt badgers and
other burrowing animals.
E 2. Creating an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another. They will
have the same exact DNA as the parent.
F 3. DNA is cut out of one organism and put into another organism. A trait will
be transferred from one organism to another.
A 4. Luther Burbank created a disease resistant potato called the Burbank
potato. He crossed a disease resistant plant with one that had a large food
producing capacity.
G 5. A technique used to compare DNA from two or more organisms.
C 6. Breeding of organism that genetically similar to maintain desired traits.
It keeps each breed unique from others.
Activity 5 Genetic Engineering Techniques
Directions. Express your idea, whether you agree or disagree in the following
statements about the current technology in genetic engineering. Write your
answers in your journal notebook. Choose two from the three techniques.

1. Monkeys have been Cloned, Paving the way for Human Cloning
I do understand that we need this kind of experimentation to better our
knowledge of how far we can go with a human body. Cloning for animals is
fine maybe for the reasons of saving the lines of endangered species but
imagine, if ever we succeeded with cloning and to actually do this to an
innocent child is just cruel. I guess with the population we have now and
with so many other reasons, we shouldn’t need to get to that point, but
rather focus on how we could “clone” or double our efforts to save Earth.

2. Bacteria as Living Microrobots to Fight Cancer

I guess this one is much more better than the statement in #1, we should
save lives and prevent to lose one. It’s much more greater than creating
another one. With the advancement of our technologies we can fight cancer!

3. Two genetic regions (variants in both ABO blood group locus and cluster of genes in
chromosome 3) Linked with Severe COVID-19
To be honest I don’t have a better understanding about this statement but I am
hoping what I researched on a small span of time is accurate. My take on this
is that people have different set of chromosomes that makes us unique to one
another one may have stronger immunity than the other. So some individuals
when got infected with the virus some may have mild and some may have
severe symptoms, and with that scientist mostly found these said two gene
regions on an infected person with severe symptoms.
