Blue Light

Good morning teachers and my dear friends. Today I Aarav Jhawar

from class 5-E is going to speak about the harmful effects of blue
light. Now what exactly is blue light? It is the light with blue
wavelengths which are beneficial during daylight hours because they
boost attention, reaction times and mood. However, these lights are
great for the daytime because they keep us awake and bad at night
as the often impede sleep. Now your eye is equipped with structures
that protect it from some kinds of light. Your cornea and lens protect
the light-sensitive retina at the back of your eye from damaging UV
rays. A 2020 study published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology
found that during COVID-19 lockdowns, for example, 32.4% of the
study population used a blue-light-emitting device 9 to 11 hours per
day. Another 15.5% used the devices 12 to 14 hours per day — a sizable
increase in screen time, probably due to changes in the way people work
during the pandemic. Research has shown that when people use
computers, laptops, and other digital devices, they tend to blink less
often than normal. Fewer blinks can mean less moisture. Now you also
would be wondering why is it called blue light why not red or green
or some other colour because it has a shorter wavelength and higher
amount of energy.

Now let’s talk about the harmful effects of blue light.

 It causes eyestrain.
 They cause permanent eye damage.
 We also have dry eyes.
 It causes macular degeneration.
 We also have sleep issues.
 We have blurry vision.
 It also fools the brain into thinking it is daytime and the
body stops. releasing a sleep hormone called melatonin.
 Also a small 2015 study found that when people are exposed
to blue light in the evening hours, their bodies don’t release
as much melatonin, and their sleep cycles are delayed or
disrupted.

Now let’s talk about how we can protect our eyes from blue light.

 You should limit your screen time

 If you use your device at night you should put the night light on
or download a blue filter app.
 Try not to use your devices directly before bedtime.
 You should blink your eyes more when you see a device.
 Get regular comprehensive eye exams.

So I hope that now you know what is blue light their harmful effects
and how to protect your eyes from blue light. Thank you for your
valuable time and have a nice day ahead.
